Other names:: What is a enclosed campfire hut? Kota / Kodat / Vuokrakodat / Lapp Hut / Hirsikodat: These all translate to “Campfire huts" in Finnish. They are enclosed buildings for a group to enjoy cooking food over a fire. They look like a modern teepee. The origin comes from the Sámi people. They have a fireplace inside, a grill over the fire to cook and benches around it. They are usually designed for larger groups. Almost all will provide firewood & many have an outdoor toilet. Some older ones have dirt floors and are a very cold in the winter but most modern ones have wooden floors, insulated and are quite warm in the winter. A few nicer ones will have electricity. Many cities & neighborhoods have these on their hiking trails to use for free. Others are owned by private businesses and can be rented for 3-4 hours or a whole day. Some allow overnight stay, but most do not. To find these on huts.fi use the advanced filter called “Type of Hut” select “enclosed campfire hut.” You can also use the filter “Is it free” to find ones that are free.
