Description: The Kainuu Tar Trail (Kainuu Tervareit trail) is a long kayaking / canoe route that goes from Kuhmo to Sotkamo to Kajaani. You can hop on and off it in many locations. This post shows the first section of the route from Änäti to the center of Kuhmo It is good to know that even though there are many portages, they are all very easy to navigate. Many of them have Laavu & Outdoor grills next to them to make the process enjoyable. And most of the rapids you can go around using the old tar railways. There are some wilderness cafes & companies that offer tent / cabin accommodations along the way. But also many huts & campfire spots that provide easy free camping. Even one free sauna on the island of lehtosaari . And of course it is Finland, so you can camp under the every mans right pretty much anywhere for free. When you get close to Saarensalmi you do have any option to go west towards the village of Niva and through the rapids to Lentua or the eastern route which is much more wilderness like from Iivantiirajärvi to Juttuajärvi and from there through an old rail way portage to Lentua. They both are around the same lenth (22 - 25 km). The western is more wilderness & less rapids.
