Description

Kanavuori Trail is about 2.9 km of marked walking on a rocky hill beside Highway 4 in Vaajakoski, Jyväskylä, in Central Finland. For markings, maintenance responsibility, season tips, and feedback channels, Metsähallitus publishes the Kanavuori trail page on Luontoon.fi. The City of Jyväskylä briefly introduces the same path where it climbs the east side of Vaajakoski on state-owned land, with the first nature-trail post at Saltunlahti. Visit Jyväskylä Region rounds out practical visitor detail, including how steps and fixed rope handrails ease the steepest climb, where to park near Naissaari, and how Linkki buses reach the area. From the Saltuntie shoreline the route soon passes the Naissaari and Uimalanniemi recreation strip: Naissaaren frisbeegolfrata, Uimalanniemen avantouintipaikka, Uimalanniemen beachvolleykenttä and Uimalanniemen uimaranta sit within a few hundred metres of the start and pair well with a half-day outing if you want a swim, disc golf, or winter swimming in season before or after the hill climb. Sturdy shoes with good grip matter, especially on the ascent and descent. Length & route

The trail is about 2.9 km end to end. Brochures and tourism copy sometimes round the same walk to about 3.0–3.4 km; that is usually rounding or a slightly different measured line, not a separate trail. The opening kilometre gains most of the height with flights of steps, rope handrails, and rocky tread, while the summit ridge mixes forest floor and smooth bedrock with repeated views.

Getting there

The signed start is at the inner end of Etu-Kanavuorentie on the shore of Saltunlahti; Visit Jyväskylä Region lists WGS84 coordinates 62.24024, 25.89290 for that trailhead. A very small lay-by suits about two cars at the beginning of Etu-Kanavuorentie; most drivers use the Naissaari parking area, then walk roughly 700 m to the start. Local Linkki buses stop a little over a kilometre away, and Digitransit has up-to-date timetables.

Good to know

Metsähallitus hosts the official feedback form linked from Luontoon.fi. Jyväskylä asks for dogs to stay leashed on the city’s official nature-trail network pages, a rule that fits etiquette here as well. Cycling is meant for other city forest routes; nature-trail pages stress foot travel on the official luontopolut network. Independent walkers report no maintained campfire site on this hill route; carry your own snacks and pack out litter.
