Description

Tourujoki Nature Trail is about 0.8 km along the natural riverbank of Tourujoki on the edge of Jyväskylä’s grid-planned centre, inside the Tourujoki valley nature reserve. The valley holds broadleaf woodland and spring-mire vegetation that is unusual for the city and wider region; woodland balsam grows abundantly here. Early summer often brings nightingale song and blackcap warblers in the trees. In winter a few common mergansers use the river, woodpeckers work the forest, and owls such as Ural, Tawny, and Pygmy owls and northern hawk-owl have been recorded—give resting owls space. Steep banks and wet, erosion-prone soil required bridges, long flights of stairs, and boardwalks; tread carefully on wood and steps when frost or rain makes them slick. There is no winter maintenance, but walkers usually keep a path passable. Dogs are not allowed anywhere in the reserve—leave-no-trace practice applies. The route lies a few minutes’ walk from the city centre. If you combine the outing with Tuomiojärvi’s shore, Tuomiojärven parkkipaikka (4 hrs) offers timed street-style parking nearby. The wider shore area links to Harjun kuntorata Jyväskylä and, in winter ice conditions, Tuomiojärven jääladut 8,5 km for longer skiing on the lake—separate routes from this short riverside walk. Length & route

The trail is about 0.8 km as mapped. Published descriptions often round to about 700 m or 0.7 km for the same line. Allow roughly 20–40 minutes on foot with the stairs, boardwalks, and nine information boards along the way. The path is not a loop: one main riverside board marks the start near the south end of the old cemetery, and a smaller board stands on Kankaankatu at the north side of the cemetery.

Getting there

On foot it is about 10 minutes from Kompassi square to the Tourukatu / Kankaankatu end of the trail. The City of Jyväskylä places the main riverside board roughly level with the south end of the old cemetery, with the northern board on Kankaankatu. Visit Jyväskylä Region gives example coordinates near the Tourukatu/Kankaankatu corner. For drivers, street parking is available nearby; Tuomiojärven parkkipaikka (4 hrs) sits a short walk from the shore sections toward Tuomiojärvi.

History

The trail was built in 1995 by the then Central Finland Environment Centre and is maintained by the City of Jyväskylä. In June 2016 the route was also named Heikin polku after Heikki Sihvonen, the city’s environmental protection planner for 35 years, on his retirement. Around 2009 a section of riverbank slope collapsed mid-trail; the bank was stabilised with rock and cover materials. Long-term plans to remove the downstream power plant and restore a free-flowing channel will change how Tourujoki looks beside the trail; Retkipaikka summarised the debate as it stood in the mid-2010s.
