Description

Kontioreitti is a mountain biking circuit in the Pihlajavesi countryside in Keuruu, Central Finland. The route is about 18 km as one continuous ride on our map. The My Pihlajavesi community site describes the name, which refers to bear and wolf country in the local bog and forest mosaic, and the quiet, nature-focused character of the ride. The Visit Jyväskylä Region’s Lipas-based outdoor listings summarise it as a gravel- and forest-road ride with a few path sections. The recommended riding direction is counter-clockwise, starting from Karansalmen kylätalo on the Pihlajavesi shore, where there is room to park and an information board; Jalkaisin’s on-the-ground account from the same autumn visit lines up with that trailhead layout. From the early kilometres you pass berry-farm edges and stream scenery near Pihlaiskosket Kalastuspaikka and Pihlaiskosken kota, then Kuuskosken Laavu - Keuruu for a longer break among riverside woods. Mid-route, Kankikota sits near Kankijoki and the Kankimylly heritage mill area—worth a stop for water and mill history. Getting there

Start at Karansalmen kylätalo on Ähtärintie by the Pihlajavesi shore—parking and an information board face the beach area above the swimming place. From Keuruu town, follow local roads toward Pihlajavesi and Karansalmi; the City of Keuruu links Komoot collections and PDF collections for gravel and MTB loops from the same sports-route hub.

Good to know

Riding is best when forest roads are dry; spring thaw can soften gravel surfaces on similar countryside routes in Central Finland. Respect Pirkan Taival hikers where the routes coincide, control speed on road crossings, and follow firewood and fire rules at laavu and kota stops.
