The trail is about 1.4 km as one continuous point-to-point link on our map. It is a short yhdyspolku intended to stitch Poika-aho into Tulijärven polku, Kotajärven polku, Keski-Suomen maakuntaura, and the overlapping cycling and ski corridors rather than functioning as its own day hike.

Getting there

Use Metsähallitus driving directions on Eräluvat for Poika-aho: from Highway 13 near Saarijärvi follow the Kannonkoski road, turn onto Viitasaarentie, then Majajärventie and roughly four kilometres of forest road to the yard gate; parking is on the roadside widening and cars may not enter the courtyard. There is no winter road ploughing on that forest road. Long-distance bus routes serve Saarijärvi or Viitasaari; continue by taxi, bike, or on foot from town according to your plan. Hikers already on Tulijärven polku, Keski-Suomen maakuntaura, or Kotajärven polku can reach the Poika-aho spur from those marked lines without using the forest road.

Good to know

Poika-aho vuokratupa is reserved for sheep herding between late May and early September; public bookings use other windows and must follow the current Eräluvat calendar. Open fires in the rental yard are forbidden except where the cabin instructions allow; telttailu is permitted only for hut renters. National-park dog and camping rules are summarised on Luontoon.fi. Forestry work elsewhere in the regional trail network can occasionally affect signage; carry a map if you combine this spur with long-distance travel.
