Description

Pakosuo loop nature trail is about 4.4 km as a summer loop through Salamajärvi National Park at Sysilampi in Perho, Central Ostrobothnia. For maps, regulations, and up-to-date service notes, start with Metsähallitus on the Pakosuon kierros trail page on Luontoon.fi. Retkipaikka’s Salamajärvi guide lists Pakosuon kierros among the short nature loops that begin from the Sysilampi open-hut yard and introduce the area’s habitats and wildlife. Jenny Klemetti’s autumn trip story on Retkipaikka describes long stretches of well-kept duckboards on open mire and patches of older forest; she used the walk as an easy morning outing and packed a flask because the mire loop itself has no extra wind shelter or fireplace along the boards. The Salamajärvi write-up on Sydän rinnassa, reppu selässä adds that the route feels more varied than some neighbouring circuits: mostly mire, but the path also climbs onto low wooded islands and follows the shore of a small bog pond, and with patience you might glimpse the park’s forest reindeer. Think of the walk in two layers. Around the Sysilampi trail hub you have practical services before or after the loop: Sysilampi porakaivo, Sysilampi laituri Salamajärvi at the lake, Sysilampi sauna Salamajärvi, and two campfire places, Sysilampi tulentekopaikka Salamajärvi and Sysilampi tulentekopaikka 2 Salamajärvi—useful for drying off after a swim or sauna and for a cooked meal when rules and conditions allow. About half a kilometre along the marked loop from that cluster, Sysilampi pysäköintialue gives drivers a clear parking base; many parties walk from there into the duckboard ring and return to Sysilampi vuokratupa and Sysilampi autiotupa at the end of the circuit. The wider Salamajärvi trail network connects here as well: the long Peuran polku runkoreitti E6 long-distance route passes the same Sysilampi stops, Hirvaan kierros is the park’s major multi-day ring, and Lasten luontopolku offers a very short family circuit from the same yard if you want an even gentler warm-up. Terrain stays easy underfoot where visitors have built duckboards, with natural soil and roots in the forested knobs between mires. Allow roughly an hour or a little more at a family pace, and carry wind layers because open bog catches the breeze. The trail is about 4.4 km as one summer loop on our map. Retkipaikka’s overview rounds to about 4.5 km and independent hikers sometimes quote about 4.3–5 km for the same circuit—measuring points differ, but the geometry we publish stays at roughly 4.4 km. Much of the distance is duckboards across open raised bog, with shorter forest sections between mire pools; Klemetti emphasises how well maintained the boards felt on her visit, while Sydän rinnassa, reppu selässä notes climbs onto low wooded islands and a moment along a small pond edge. Expect only small elevation changes. There is no need to attribute the metre-precise loop length to blogs once our line is the reference; the bloggers mainly add a sense of surface and scenery.

Getting there

The practical trailhead parking for many visitors is Sysilampi pysäköintialue, a short walk from the Sysilampi huts and sauna cluster described on visitor sites. Salamajärvi is easiest with your own car; Retkipaikka summarises how buses reach only nearby villages, with the last leg by bike or taxi if you are not starting from a park shuttle season. Koirasalmi nature information hut is the park’s main service point for rentals and advice when you are planning a longer stay, though Sysilampi itself already holds rental and open huts.

Good to know

Salamajärvi is a national park: remain on marked trails, keep dogs under control as required on Luontoon.fi, and observe instructions that protect bog habitats and reindeer. Firewood practices at official shelters and fireplaces follow Metsähallitus rules posted locally—read them before lighting a campfire.
