This is the canoe / kayak launch point after you bypass the Kallioinen power plant on the Ontojoki River. You can only launch a canoe, kayak or row boat. Follow the map to portage your kayak. NOTE: The water discharged from the power plant makes the current very strong where. you launch. Also the first bridge you go under the water current is also very strong.

Pajakkasuvanto kayaking pier is right before the Pajakkakoski rapids. It is a pier build to help kayakers get in and out of their kayaks easily. The Pajakkakoski canoeing pier is not a very good starting point, as there is no road next to it, only a cycle path. It is better to get to the water a little further from Maakunnanranta . You can swim from the pier, but it is not suitable for small children. Please note that there are currents on the shore.



a 15 meters long and 3 meters wide pier. Its purpose is to allow boats to refuel as there are two gas stations nearby. It is surrounded by a breakwater to protect the pier. If you are a member of the Sotkamo Boaters Association you can get a key to unlock the carts for transporting fuel tanks. The municipality of Sotkamo is responsible for the condition of the pier.

There is a kayaking pier here to launch kayaks & canoes. This makes it a good launch point if you are going west to Kajaanijoki River (towards the center of Kajaani) or east to Lake Nuasjärvi. There is a large pier, boat ramp and beach at this location. It is maintained by Naapurivaara Holiday Centre. It is a great spot for boaters or kayakers to stop. Melontalaituri valmistuu 2018 There is a kayaking pier and a landing place next to Kesäniemi beach. A good pier has been built for kayakers next to the supervised and restricted beach area. The pier is a good starting point for those heading towards Kajaanijoki, Rehjasaari, Kuluntalahti, Karankalahti or even Sotkamo.

The Kaitainsalmi boat launch in Sotkamo makes it easy to launch a canoe or kayak for routes going to Kiimasjärvi and Kaitianjärvi / Pirttijärvi. There is a pier & a concrete boat launch ramp. Camping is not permitted.

Behind the winter war museum (Talvisotamuseo) on the shore of Kalevankangas there is a nice kayaking pier to launch your canoe or kayak. Just follow the small road behind the museum to the shore. It is a good starting point for trips on Lammasjärv, like to Harakkasaari or Honkinen islands. The beach is very rocky and not supervised. It is possible to drive down to the pier to launch your boat.
The canoeing route across Lake Lentiiranjärvi begins here. Many decide to start the Kainuu Tervareit kayaking route from this location. As the other side ( Sääskenniemi, Änättijärvi) can be very rocky when the water is low. There is no pier or anything here, but there is a parking lot you can leave the car and it is relatively easily to get your kayak in the water. If you are on the Kainuu Tervareit kayaking route this is the launch site after you bypass the Katerma power plant. You are going to need to bypass another power plant in about 10 kilometers (Kallioinen power plant). The Ontojoki River used to have powerful rapids but not it is in between two power plants. It is good to keep in mind that the current can be very strong in this 10 km stretch, especially in the narrow parts. There are trout, pike, white fish and perch in the river. They also stock the river with rainbow trout.
