Next to the Tervasalmi Museum Bridge is Tervasalmi concrete boat ramp on Lake Ontojärvi. The Kymmensylinen - Kalliojärvi kayaking route goes under the bridge.

Paloniemi boating beach on the eastern part of Lake Ontojärvi. With a concrete boat ramp, sandy / gravel beach, a protected breack water and parking your car is allowed it is a good place to start trips on Lake Ontojärvi. It also has a slipway for up to 20 boats and winter storage facilities. If you are launching a kayak or canoe use the sandy / gravel beack next to the breakwater, the water deepens quickly.

On the astern end of Lake Ontojärvi there is Jämäslahti Bay, there is an old timber transportation site which now serves as the Jämäs boat harbor. Jämäki has a slipway for about 15 boats and a concrete boat ramp maintained by the City of Kuhmo. You can park your car here so it is a good location for the start of kayak or boat trips.


Near the Lentuankoski rapids there is this sandy beach that has a boat ramp. Which makes a great landing spot for boats or kayakers. The Lentua nature reserve is very large and this location is a great starting point for kayak trips. For example you can go to <a href="https://www.huts.fi/2337291-selkasaari-laavu-kuhmo">Selkäsaari</a> then to <a href="https://www.huts.fi/2440845-lehtosaaren-autiotupa">Lehtosaari</a> which you can stay overnight in a free cabin which has a sauna! Following the kayak routes on the map you will be more sheltered by the islands. Most of the islands you will land on are shallow & rocky.

A boat ramp on Lake Änättijärvi, Kuhmo. This is the start of the famous Kainuun tervareitti (tar route).

The shore is covered in reeds and is therefore a bit of a challenging starting point, especially at shallower water.

Katerma boat launch site is in the village of Katerma and is located at the western end of Lake Ontojärvi, right at the mouth of the Ontojoki River. This serves as a landing point on the Kainuu Tervareitti water hiking kayaking route. There is a gravel boat launch on the beach, where you can launch at least a rowing boat. The beach is a gravel beach that deepens relatively quickly. KAYAKERS: This beach serves as the starting point for bypassing the Katerma hydroelectric power plant. Further down, towards the power plant, the river has been built into a chute and there is no way up. The current near the power plant can be dangerously strong! You can see on the map the portage route. It is 1.8 km so you will need a trailer.

The city of Niva has a concert boat launch / boat ramp here. Located on Onkilahti at the south end of Lake Iivantiirajärvi. There is also a small beach, so you can also launch a kayak. There is space to park your car on the beach.

There used to be log floating site at this location. Now it serves has a boat launch site. There is a concrete boat ramp in a sheltered area. A laavu and parking. The water is deep and you can launch larger boats. Lake Kiimasjärvi is known for being a good fishing lake. This is also a good location to launch kayaks if you are starting on the Kainuu Tervereitti kayaking route. The Ontojoki Village Association is responsible for the lean-to on the beach.

About 200 meters before the Kallioinen power plant on the Ontojoki River there is a concrete boat ramp that kayakers on the Kainuu Tervareitti kayaking route use to bypass the plant. (you have to). It is also possible to launch a larger boat. Follow the map which shows the portage route to take.
