Description
The Kouta–Vuores retkipolut use the same marked trail network on the east shore of Lake Oulujärvi in the Koutaniemi–Vuoreslahti area, a short drive from Kajaani in Kainuu. For the national outdoor catalogue description of terrain and services, start from the Kouta–Vuores hiking trails page on Luontoon.fi. Visit Kajaani and the Koutaniemi–Vuoreslahti village association publish local visitor notes, parking advice, and maps on their own sites.
The City of Kajaani states that its hiking trails are generally available for mountain biking as well as walking, with faster users yielding to slower ones; Kirkkokallio and Iso-Syvälammi are called out as exceptions that are not suitable for cycling. Treat this as a shared path: ride under control on narrow or busy sections, especially near Akkovaara where use has been heavy in recent seasons and officials encourage spreading visits across Heinisuo, Lautavaara, and other trailheads.
On our map this route is about 17.5 km as one continuous line through the network. Surfaces are mostly forest track, open rock, and duckboard in wet places, with blue paint marks and signposts at junctions. Early on you pass Akkovaaran nuotiopaikka and Akkovaaran näköalatorni on the open hill, then Jättiläisenluola - Akkovaara and Pirunpelto - Akkovaara. About 7 km from the start, Akkovaaran perhereitin P-paikka is a parking area if you join from that side. Further north, Koutalahden venesatama at Kalasatamantie 23 is a natural stop by the water.
The same landscape links to the walking-oriented Kouta-Vuores -retkipolut line, the short Jättiläisten jalanjäljissä - perheretki Akkovaaralle family loop, and the Vuoreslahti/Akkovaara melontareitti paddling route; put-in and safety details are on a dedicated paddling route page. Spring thaw can leave the main Akkovaara forest road soft; Heinisuo is often suggested as an alternative start when conditions are poor.
Free Trek mountain bikes are available to borrow from the City of Kajaani at Vesiliikuntakeskus Kaukavesi, Jokikatu 5, with advance booking through the city website and ID on pickup—see Vesiliikuntakeskus Kaukavesi for current loan hours.
Length & route
About 17.5 km as one continuous biking line on our map through the Kouta–Vuores network. The wider system offers many loop and connector options; riding time depends on how you stitch segments and how often you stop at viewpoints and campfire sites.
Getting there
The network has several main starting areas; parking is developed at Akkovaara and Heinisuo, with further options via Lautavaara and forest roads shown on the association map. Visit Kajaani lists working parking at Heinirannantie 146 and at the Åhlström forest road trailhead. There is no regular winter maintenance at the main parking areas—plan tyres and access accordingly. GPX traces for Kajaani-area biking and hiking routes are published via the jalki.fi service linked from the city cycling pages.
Good to know
Campfire sites are maintained at Akkovaara, Paljakkakallio, and the Pitkäsuo area; the Pitkäsuo end has a lean-to mentioned for overnight use in official descriptions. Open fires follow general wildfire warnings. When combining with paddling, read the Vuoreslahti/Akkovaara route page for put-in and safety notes.
