The Sairaalanrinne Health Forest is a short, barrier-free forest walk beside Kainuu Central Hospital in Kajaani, intended as a terveysmetsä where people can use nature deliberately for wellbeing, recovery, and learning. For trail-specific access, facilities, and parking rules, start with the City of Kajaani’s Sairaalarinteen terveysmetsä page, and for visitor-oriented wording plus a trail map link, Visit Kajaani’s Hospital Slope Health Forest service page is helpful alongside it. The trail is about 0.2 km as one small loop in our geometry. Along the barrier-free section, the city describes roughly 120 metres of wooden walkway with handrails leading to Terveysmetsän avolaavu, an accessible lean-to with a campfire place, three-height seating, and supplied firewood. A timber rest point on the same accessible line adds three-height seating and signage that supports simple sensory exercises. The wider health-forest concept, co-developed by Kajaani, Kainuu wellbeing services, Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, and the Natural Resources Institute Finland, emphasizes evidence-based nature settings for prevention and rehabilitation; national reporting at opening highlighted it as Kainuu’s first dedicated terveysmetsä beside a hospital. The accessible boardwalk is not maintained for winter use. Around the same patch of urban forest, an approximately one-kilometre fitness loop—used as a ski track in snow—offers steeper climbing and is not barrier-free, and a path through the middle of the wood is likewise not accessible. If you are combining visits with the Vimpelinlaakso sports belt, several nearby routes (for example lit skiing or running loops) pass within a few hundred metres of this pocket of forest, but their surfaces and grades belong to ordinary outdoor sports infrastructure rather than this hospital-adjacent accessible line. Kajaani lies in Kainuu, and the hospital’s forest edge keeps the experience unusually easy to reach for patients, staff, school groups, and residents who want a very short nature break without leaving the city.
The barrier-free circuit is about 0.2 km end-to-end in our GPX. The City of Kajaani describes roughly 120 m of hand-railed wooden walkway on that accessible line, leading to the lean-to and rest structures. Allow only a few minutes for the boardwalk itself; linger longer if you use the lean-to or sensory stops. A separate, non-accessible fitness loop of about 1 km encircles the wood with steep climbs, with a winter ski-track use.
The health forest sits in the forest beside Kainuu Central Hospital at Sotkamontie 13, Kajaani. The signed start lies about 200 m from the hospital car park between buildings I and J, with a map board and information point. Accessible toilets are available inside Kainuu Central Hospital. Parking uses the hospital’s paid car park; accessible spaces are near the main entrance and in front of buildings I and J. Extra spaces behind the ball hall at Vimpelinlaakso (Kuntokatu 6) are mentioned as being about 0.5 km from the lean-to on a steep, non-accessible connection. The City of Kajaani and Kainuu wellbeing services maintain the route; feedback is accepted through the city’s eFeedback channel linked from the trail page. Visit Kajaani lists +358 8 61551 for general visitor-service questions about the productised health-forest page.
Campfire wood at the accessible lean-to is provided as part of the maintained facility. Because the boardwalk is not winter-maintained, expect snow and ice to hide gradients outside the snow-free season unless you verify current conditions locally. Hospital parking is subject to the hospital’s own fees and rules; budget time to walk the 200 m approach from payment machines to the I–J courtyard entrance. Dogs are not singled out on the official trail pages consulted—confirm local leash rules with the land manager if you bring a pet.
The Sairaalarinteen terveysmetsä opening was celebrated on 26 October 2022 with the accessible boardwalk and lean-to finished for public use. Partners named at opening included the City of Kajaani, Kainuu’s social and health services (Kainuu sote), Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), within a broader Terveysmetsämallit project focused on improving work and functional capacity. National media coverage at the construction stage described the site as Kainuu’s first hospital-adjacent terveysmetsä.
