The Leskensaari loop is a short urban lake circuit on Lammasjärvi in Kuhmo, aimed at paddlers who want a calm introduction to the town’s waterfront without committing to a wilderness stage. The line is about 5.1 km as a loop and stays on sheltered lake water suited to kayak, canoe, or SUP. Visit Kuhmo publishes a printable PDF map for this route and lists it among the municipality’s downloadable paddling sheets, which is the best place to confirm the latest map and any seasonal notes.
A natural start and finish is Maakunnanranta on the town shore: the site has served boat traffic since the tar era, and Visit Kuhmo’s waterfront article still points out the Tervansoutaja memorial, guest berths, a concrete boat ramp, and family-friendly shore space near the centre—practical staging when you unload boats and walk to services. From the water you look across Lammasjärvi toward the church ridge, local industry silhouettes, and the mix of wooded islands and small bays that Retkipaikka’s long Kuhmo paddling story celebrates as part of the region’s “Riviera” of sand beaches and island stops on bigger lakes—here the scale is compact, but the same lake-focused mindset applies.
Along the loop, the line passes the Pajakka–Tuupala shore where a dedicated canoe dock and museum cluster sit close to the route, then swings toward Ruukinranta where the town beach, winter-swimming point, and Kuhmo-talo culture centre face the water—useful landmarks if you time a coffee or swim break. The first stage of the Kainuu Tar Route paddles into this same town harbour network after long wilderness legs; if you are planning a multi-day tar-route trip, this loop is an easy skills warm-up on shared water.
Koe Kainuu rents inflatable tandem packrafts in Kuhmo with pump, paddles, and buoyancy aids from a base a few minutes from the centre. The same tourism site’s paddling and SUP activity page names additional local outfitters for kayaks, canoes, and SUP boards when you prefer a different craft or a guided day.
Length & route
The route is about 5.1 km as one continuous loop on Lammasjärvi with no portage or whitewater in regional materials. It is intended as an easy, short day trip on flat water rather than a rapid run; allow roughly 1–2 hours of paddling at a relaxed pace depending on wind and photo stops. Visit Kuhmo groups it with other town-side Lammasjärvi outings and links a dedicated PDF map from the kayaking routes hub.
Getting there
Launch and land at Maakunnanranta in central Kuhmo (Kirkkotie 4 area): guest boat dock, concrete ramp, and shore parking are described on Visit Kuhmo’s Maakunnanranta page. Additional town parking sits near Pajakkakoski and the library shore, and Ruukinranta offers a large beach car park if you stage from the eastern shore—match the car park to which half of the loop you prefer to walk from. The bus station is a short walk from Maakunnanranta for visitors arriving without a car.
Good to know
Wear a buoyancy aid and check wind on Lammasjärvi before you leave the harbour; urban fetches can still raise short chop. For fishing from a kayak with gear that needs a Metsähallitus permit on state waters around Kuhmo, use the Eräluvat area page for 4510 Kuhmo. Respect private shore strips and angling lines near Pajakka. During forest-fire warnings open fires may be restricted even at public fireplaces; follow regional alerts.
Virkistys- ja kanoottilaitureiden tarkat sijainnit on koottu Visit Kuhmon melonnan ja reittisivuille.
History
Maakunnanranta was the historic tar-boat harbour for Kuhmoniemi parish: tar barrels were shipped toward Oulu along Ontojärvi–Lammasjärvi until road haulage took over, and the Tervansoutaja statue now marks that waterfront era on the same launch beach paddlers use today.
Where to rent kayaks
Koe Kainuu rents FitNord inflatable tandem packrafts in Kuhmo—about 40 € per day, 90 € for three days, or 140 € per week including pump, paddles, and buoyancy aids, with pickup in the Tönölä / Kalevala area a few minutes from the centre. The paddling and SUP activity page on the regional tourism site names EräPiira, Kalevalan juhlatakomo, Lentiiran Lomakylä, Lentuankoski campsite, and other operators for kayaks, canoes, SUP boards, and guided trips—pick the provider that matches your craft and whether you need shuttles toward longer Kuhmo lakes.
