There is no winter maintenance.

Getting there

The usual trailhead is Hossan luontokeskus at Jatkonsalmentie 6, 89920 Suomussalmi. Park at Luontokeskus pysäköintipaikka and pick up the path from the centre forecourt; Retkipaikka confirms signing from that parking area. Taipaleita notes you can also join from Huosilampi pysäköintipaikka on the lake shore when you want to skip the centre link path. Keihäslampi pysäköintipaikka sits on the western shore cluster if that matches your approach by car.
