Description
Aulangonjärvi Lake Trail is a circular hiking route of about 6 km around Lake Aulangonjärvi in the Aulanko nature reserve, Hämeenlinna, Kanta-Häme. The lake sits inside Finland’s first national urban park, and the wider woodland is managed by Metsähallitus. For swimming spots, free rowing boats at Aulangon ulkoilumaja, the observation tower season, and the Sibelius Forest interpretation trail, start with the City of Hämeenlinna’s Aulanko outdoor area pages. Luontoon.fi lists this route as Aulangonjärven polku with the same trailhead logic and reserve context.
Near the start you pass Aulangonjärven kota and can use Aulangon ulkokuntosali beside the path; Aulanko näkötorni pysäköintialue and Aulanko Näkötorni kahvilarakennus sit close to the famous granite tower when you want a break before climbing. Along the eastern shore, about 1.3 km in, Lusikkaniemen uimapaikka offers a dip, and Kihtersuon uimaranta follows with a developed beach and jetties. On the high ground inland, Kärmeskallion nuotiopaikka is a natural lunch stop with views toward the water. Completing the loop along the western shore you reach Aulangonjärven uimaranta, Aulangonjärven talviuintipaikka for winter swimmers when ice allows, and Aulangon ulkoilumaja at Linnanen 77 with boats and kota fire pit in season — details and rules are on our place pages and the city site. Several car parks serve the ring: Aulanko Joutsenlampi pysäköintialue pohjoinen, Aulanko Metsälampi pysäköintialue läntinen, Aulanko Metsälampi pysäköintialue pohjoinen, and Aulanko näkötorni pysäköintialue, so you can shorten the approach from different sides of the reserve.
The same junctions link to other marked routes: Ulkoilumajan luontopolku circles the lodge shore, Aulanko puu- ja pensaslajipolku and Aulanko Ruusulaakson reitti explore the Rose Valley and tree species trail by Metsälampi and Joutsenlampi, and Vanajaveden rantareitti continues the long lakeside path toward central Hämeenlinna. In winter, lit ski tracks such as Aulangon kymppi latu and Aulangon kuntoladut touch the same beaches and parking. A walk-focused account on Retkipaikka notes yellow paint markings in the woods, long duckboard sections tight to the water, and steady gravel shared with cyclists and dog walkers on some bays — worth reading for photos and pacing tips.
Hämeenlinna is the home city for this loop, and Kanta-Häme frames the wider region.
Length & route
The trail is about 6 km as one loop around Lake Aulangonjärvi. Some printed and web guides round the circuit to about 7 km depending on how they measure the ring and link paths. The marked ring mixes lakeshore duckboards, soft forest footpaths, and wider gravel near bays and cottages; boardwalks run close to the water on the eastern side. In the woods the route is marked with yellow paint spots.
Getting there
A natural start is Aulangon ulkoilumaja at Linnanen 77, where the city describes free rowing boats in open-water season and a kota fire ring. Large-capacity parking sits around Joutsenlampi and Metsälampi: use Aulanko Joutsenlampi pysäköintialue pohjoinen from the north shore, Aulanko Metsälampi pysäköintialue läntinen or Aulanko Metsälampi pysäköintialue pohjoinen near Metsälampi, or Aulanko näkötorni pysäköintialue if you plan to combine the tower first — that lot is smaller and busy in summer. You can walk the loop either way around the lake.
Good to know
Lake Aulangonjärvi is fishing-association water; permits are sold online through the national licence shop linked from the city pages. The observation tower is free when open, typically from Mother’s Day to the end of October daily 08:00–20:00; confirm before climbing. Mountain biking belongs on signed MTB lines such as Metsä-Aulangon Maastopyöräreitti and Aulanko maastopyöräreitti vaativa, not on this foot trail.
History
Aulanko’s park forest began as a nineteenth-century English-style landscape park by Colonel Hugo Standertskjöld and is now part of Finland’s first national urban park. The Sibelius Forest nature reserve east of Lake Aulangonjärvi was established in 2018, with Natura 2000 status and interpretation boards tying Jean Sibelius to the woodland; Levonkorven kierros extended the nature-trail network around 2021. The granite observation tower above Vanajavesi dates from the early twentieth century.
