Description

Poronpolku is a classic ridge-and-forest trail network in western Loppi, Kanta-Häme, on the Häme Lake Uplands. The line on our map is about 20.7 km and is not a loop; the wider Poronpolku system is marked in the terrain with colour-coded distance options and ties into the long-distance Hämeen Ilvesreitti hiking network. For the annual Poronpolku event, ferry-style crossings and the exact event route card, check the City of Loppi’s Poronpolku pages; Metsähallitus also publishes a Poronpolku trail page on Luontoon.fi. Visit Häme’s Lipas listing summarises length options and stresses that the strait crossing near Marskin Maja is only available on the event day. Along the mapped route you pass Riihisalon tenniskenttä near the start, then Salonkylän uimaranta after well under a kilometre—useful if you want a swim or a shoreline pause early on. Roughly halfway, at about 9 km from the start, you reach Pilkuttimen laavu beside Pilkutin, a typical lean-to stop on longer day hikes in this area. The terrain mixes forest paths, sandy forest roads, roots, and steeper ridge slopes; one detailed walk-and-run report describes sharp height differences between ridge tops and lower “suppa” depressions and notes that markings are easier to follow with a map than on some neighbouring Komio trails. Visit Häme lists an example length of about 27 km for the full crossing variant where the event strait crossing is available. Getting there

Practical access depends on which Poronpolku leg you choose; common trailheads named in marketing include Räyskälä airfield, Hiekkakuoppa, Pirunkallio, and Luutasuo areas west of Loppi centre. Allow time to study the current map: a visitor blog recommends carrying a printed or digital route card because field markings are sparser than on some nearby Komio routes.

The City of Loppi reminds users that forest roads carry cottage traffic and that a private enduro track exists nearby—stay on marked Poronpolku and Ilvesreitti alignments. The Puneliansalmi crossing with boat or rowboat is only guaranteed on Poronpolku event day; at other times plan an out-and-back or a loop that does not need that crossing. Registration for the organised walk and bike event opens on a published summer date in a typical year.

History

Local storytelling links the name to a 1960s experiment when reindeer were kept in the area; the modern trail tradition and the Poronpolku outdoor event date back to the mid-1960s, with the walking event still held on the last Sunday of September in many years.
