Description

Olhavan laavu is a free lean-to shelter at the south end of Olhavanlampi in Repovesi National Park in Kouvola, Kymenlaakso. Metsähallitus describes the stop on Repovesi Park Rangers: the site has the lean-to, a fire ring with seating, and a table group; a woodshed about 130 metres away along Karhulahdentie holds firewood plus tools for cutting and splitting, and a chemical, non-composting toilet stands near that shed. Drinking water comes from Olhava kaivo roughly 100 metres toward the Saarijärvi direction along Karhulahdentie; the water is tested as microbiologically acceptable for household use but can show colour or taste issues, and you must not wash dishes or yourself at the well or within five metres of it. The area is not maintained in winter. Olhavan laavu and Kirnukankaan laavu are the only lean-tos in the park; the route links sit on Repovesi trails, Raven's Trail, and Kaakkurinkierros, and paddling routes pass through the wider lake area. Tent pitches are commonly used around the lean-to and woodshed; an unwritten convention reserves the separate Olhava basecamp fireplace under Olhavanvuori for climbers. From early May to mid-August, avoid unnecessary wading or swimming because Olhavanlampi is nesting habitat for red-throated divers; shoreline access is awkward in any case. Pets must be kept on a leash in the national park under Repovesi National Park instructions. The lean-to was built in 2003.

Getting there

Repovesi Park Rangers places the lean-to about 2.9 kilometres from the Saarijärvi park entrance on the same loop as Raven's Trail and Kaakkurinkierros. The nearest road address given for the wider area is Karhulahdentie 37, 47910 Kouvola, with normal visitor access from the park trail network rather than that yard gate. Good to know

There is no winter maintenance at the rest stop. Open fires are forbidden when a forest or grass-fire warning is in effect. If you camp near the large spruces by the woodshed in summer, check wind and storm forecasts because trees there have fallen in past gales. Karhulahdentie is used by landowners; give way to vehicles when moving between the lean-to, woodshed, toilet, and well.
