Description

For visitor guidance, rules, and the latest information about this marked walk in Urho Kekkonen National Park, start from Metsähallitus on the Iisakkipää Nature Trail page on Luontoon.fi. This route is about 2.2 km end to end on the map: a short, easy forest walk from Saariselkä’s national-park gate that locals and signage often call Aurorapolku. It starts beside tourist services in Saariselkä village in Inari, Lapland, crosses briefly over the ski track, drops into a small fell-side valley, and returns toward the village. Retkipaikka describes it as a wide path of roughly two kilometres, marked with purple symbols, with guiding lights along part of the route and about an hour allowed for the round trip—even relaxed picnickers often stay longer. Soon after the gate you pass Karvaselän Kummituskämppä and Kelo-ojan kota: a historic day-use hut and a Lapp kota for shelter and sausage-grill stops in a cluster of trees. About one kilometre along you reach Aurora päivätupa - tapahtumatupa and Aurora tulentekopaikka: Metsähallitus calls this Aurora day-hut territory; the building has a glass wall facing the park, a fireplace side used as an open day space, another side that can be reserved, a terrace looking into a small canyon, several outdoor fire pits, and a wood shed—firewood for visitors is supplied. The trail is for hikers only; skiing is not meant for this line. From the same gate you can continue onto longer Iisakkipää options toward the fell top and Pääsiäiskuru, or link toward Rumakuru; those full circuits are a different outing with more climb and distance. If you are mainly riding the resort bike network, Saariselän maastopyöräilyreitit shares parking near Santa's Hotel Tunturin kuntosali and the Saariselkä parking areas. Surfaces are a broad, prepared path with short climbs and descents; ice and packed snow can make slopes slippery in winter, and poles help. Strollers are possible on visits described online, but not full wheelchair access.

Length & route

The trail is about 2.2 km as one short walking line from the Saariselkä gate. Outdoor writers often quote about 2.1 km as a round distance for Aurorapolku, and Jälki.fi lists a 2.5 km naming variant for the same Saariselkä Iisakkipää nature-walk footprint—small differences are rounding and which part of the gate loop is counted. From the hut you can shorten to roughly 700 m one way or lengthen to about 1.5 km by circling, as described for family outings. Separately, the full Iisakkipää nature loop toward the fell top is often given as about 3 km or about 7 km depending on the chosen branch; that is not the line mapped here.

Getting there

Use the Saariselkä national-park gate at Lutontie 10–12 in Saariselkä, Inari: Retkipaikka and Matkalla Missä Milloinkin both anchor directions there for Iisakkipää and Aurorapolku walks. Hiihto- ja käveluliikennettä on paljon, ja Matkalla Missä Milloinkin notes the main parking area can fill quickly on busy winter days, with roadside overflow nearby. On our map the nearest car access is Saariselkä Parkkipaikka and Saariselkä Parkkipaikka 2, beside Santa's Hotel Tunturin kuntosali at Lutontie 3, 99830 for orientation. Buses from Rovaniemi and Ivalo reach Saariselkä centre about a kilometre from the gate.

Good to know

Carry a headlamp outside the lit sections in midwinter. Respect the national-park rules posted at the gate. Matkablogi Lähdetään taas suggests checking whether the reservable side of Aurora päivätupa - tapahtumatupa is free before settling indoors when another group has booked it.
