Description

The Lemmenjoki Nature Trail is an easy, family-friendly day loop of about 4.2 km at Njurkulahti on the edge of Lemmenjoki National Park in Inari, Lapland. For route descriptions, maps and national park rules, start with the Lemmenjoki Nature Trail pages on Luontoon.fi. Retkipaikka’s Lemmenjoki National Park guide presents this loop as a practical first taste of the park from the Njurkulahti parking area, with a riverside campfire spot and interpretation boards along the way. The trail is a loop through forest, gentle esker ridges and small kettle-hole ponds beside the Lemmenjoki valley. About one kilometre along you pass Kaapin Jouni laituri and Kaapin Jouni kuivakäymälä 3 on the forested shore; the Kaapin Jouni homestead area nearby is one of the best-known Sámi cultural landscapes in the valley and summer visitors may see sheep grazing the old fields, while buildings stay closed to the public. Taipaleita’s paddling journal from Njurkulahti describes quiet morning water and an easy landing at Kaapin Jouni laituri when the bay is calm. From Njurkulahti the trail also links into much longer hikes: Joenkielinen kesäretkeilyreitti and Joenkielisen kierros (Joenkielinen Trail) circle toward Joenkielinen fell and wilderness facilities along the river, Lemmenjoki Gold Trail crosses the park toward distant huts and boat landings, and Stuorravárri polku offers another marked circuit from the same parking hub. Paddlers connect toward the Solojärvi – Muddusjärvi – Njurkulahti vesiretkeilyreitti on the wider water system. Length & route

The trail is about 4.2 km as one marked loop leaving from and returning to the Njurkulahti parking hub. Some public guides round to about 4.1–4.5 km depending on how they measure the circle. Allow about 1.5–2 hours on foot with photos and a stop at Muurahaislampi. The only trail-side campfire on this loop is at Muurahaislampi; plan breaks accordingly if you want to cook on the route.

Getting there

Drive to the Metsähallitus-maintained Njurkulahti parking area at the end of Lemmenjoki kylätie (road 9551) in Inari municipality; Retkipaikka’s practical guide links directly to the Njurkulahti parking pin for sat-nav users. Inari village is roughly 45–50 km away by road and onward planning for buses, flights to Ivalo and the limited weekly demand-responsive taxi link from Inari toward Njurkulahti is summarised in park access materials referenced from Luontoon.fi. Meet Kaapin Jouni laituri and the start of the wider river-and-lake network a short walk into the loop from the trailhead infrastructure.

Good to know

A short walk from the route geometry you also pass Njurkulahti pysäköintialue kuivakäymälä beside the main Njurkulahti pysäköintialue. The nature trail is not designed as an accessible path—sources discourage expecting barrier-free access or stroller use on the rooty esker sections. History

Finland’s largest national park, Lemmenjoki, takes its Finnish name from the roughly 80 km Lemmenjoki (Northern Sámi Leammijohka, popularly explained as the “warm” river). The protected area was established in 1956. Along this nature trail, shallow depressions beside the path are remnants of historic pit traps dug for wild forest reindeer; reindeer herding later replaced that hunting style.
