Description

Vaattunkivaara Nature Trail is about 3.5 km of marked hiking in the Arctic Circle Hiking Area on the Vikajärvi side of Rovaniemi, Lapland—roughly half an hour’s drive from the city centre toward Sodankylä along Highway 4. Metsähallitus publishes the dedicated Vaattunkivaara Nature Trail page on Luontoon.fi, and Visit Rovaniemi’s Napapiiri hiking area visitor page summarises how the wider destination fits together with rapids, mires, and year-round use. Most people start at Vikaköngäs: the Vikaköngäs P-alue parking area sits by the Raudanjoki rapids, and the path crosses the Friendship Bridge over the river before climbing through shore birch forest toward Vaattunkivaara. In the first few hundred metres you pass several Vikaköngäs and Vikakönkään laavus, a small boat jetty at Vikaköngäs laituri, and plenty of places to pause above the whitewater—handy if you want a picnic before the climb. Length & route

The trail is about 3.5 km as one continuous hiking line from the Vikaköngäs area, past Kaltion laavu, over Vaattunkivaara’s summit with the observation tower, and back toward the rapids parking. Sources often describe a short connector from the Friendship Bridge into a circular segment on the flank and summit before returning along the same access leg; combined walking time is typically about 1¼–3 hours depending on photography stops and tower time. Underfoot you get crushed gravel near the start, duckboards through damp patches, and rocky tread on the hill—sturdy ankle support helps. The winter season suits snowshoeing as well as walking when conditions allow.

Getting there

Drive roughly 25 km from central Rovaniemi along Highway 4 toward Sodankylä and Vikajärvi, then follow shoreline signs to the Vikaköngäs parking area about 200 m off the main road. The Vikaköngäs P-alue coordinates are convenient for sat-nav: 66.61968 N, 26.18501 E. Long-distance buses on Sodankyläntie stop close enough to walk or taxi the last leg on fair-weather days. Another trailhead cluster lies at Vaattunkiköngäs roughly 2 km along Vaattunkiköngääntie if you are combining hikes. Flood conditions on Raudanjoki can occasionally affect lower sections of neighbouring trails such as Könkäiden polku; if water is high, expect wet feet or choose another loop for the day. Paid guided hikes into the wider Vaattunki rapids area are offered commercially in summer through local outfitters listed on Visit Rovaniemi, but independent walking on this public trail remains free.
