Description
For summer mountain bike route maps around Salla, current trail-condition notes, and the email address used for route feedback, start with the outdoor recreation section on Visit Salla. Italappi lists the Salla–Lapajärvi mountain bike route among Eastern Lapland MTB options on its East Lapland By Bike pages.
The mountain bike route is about 33.5 km end to end as one point-to-point ride through Salla in Eastern Lapland, not a loop. It links the Salla settlement area with the Lake Lapajärvi countryside south of town, using forest roads and local roads in rolling lake-and-forest terrain. Allow roughly half a day with breaks; faster groups finish sooner.
About 3 km from the start you pass the Lapajärvi nature trail lean-to on the edge of the walking network around Lake Lapajärvi. The Lapajärven luontopolku hiking trail is a separate marked walk with village-road and forest sections, laavu stops, and cultural sites along the shore. The same Lapajärvi village trail page notes a lean-to and dry toilet by the narrows between Lapajärvi and Lapalammi, with a footbridge across the strait, and points to Isäntä Matti’s Museum on the south shore for local history.
Roughly 19 km from the start the ride comes close to the outdoor exercise and play area on Kuusamontie 18—useful if you are tying the ride to town services or the wider Salla cycling network. From that area you can also connect to other trails on our map such as Lapajärven luontopolku, Sallan pyöräilyreitti, Ruuhijoen pyöräilyreitti, and Salla–Sallatunturi maastopyöräreitti toward fell scenery and national-park landscapes.
Share the trail politely with walkers on shared connectors, watch for reindeer and other road users on quiet rural roads, and download offline maps before leaving town—mobile coverage is patchy in places.
Length & route
The route is about 33.5 km end to end as one continuous point-to-point ride. Shorter published figures for a Salla–Lapajärvi segment sometimes round differently; treat this total as the full Lipas-based geometry for planning pace and fuel. Expect mixed forest roads and local-road links rather than a single closed loop.
Getting there
Use Visit Salla’s summer route PDF together with their outdoor recreation pages to match entry points to the direction you travel from Salla or Kemijärvi. The mapped start sits in the Salla area near the sampled coordinates on our page; the ride trends toward Lake Lapajärvi. The outdoor exercise and play area on Kuusamontie 18 is a practical service landmark partway along the ride if you approach from central Salla.
Good to know
For questions or feedback about local trails, Visit Salla lists reittipalaute@salla.fi together with Infogis-based winter route monitoring context on the same outdoor pages. Salla Ski Resort reminds riders to preload phone maps because phone signal can be weak away from settlements. Respect private yards when passing through Lapajärvi village roads described on the walking-trail materials.
History
The shoreline walking infrastructure around Lake Lapajärvi, including structures from the 2010–2011 East Lapland water tourism routes project, sits in the same recreational landscape this bike connector reaches.
