Description
The Kolmiloukkonen loop is a short hiking circuit on Kaunisharju in Salla National Park, eastern Lapland, around the triangular ridge pond Kolmiloukkonen. The trail is about 2.9 km as one continuous line; Metsähallitus materials for the park often describe the same circuit in round figures near four kilometres. For difficulty, seasons, and the latest official information, start with the Kolmiloukkosen kierros page on Luontoon.fi. The landscape is classic ice-age esker country: steep ridge knolls, rocky patches, and pine forest of different ages. The pond’s name reflects its three-sided shape.
From the Salla National Park nature centre area you pass lean-to and grill shelter clusters near Tammakkolampi and Upinlampi before the path reaches Kolmiloukkonen. Kolmiloukkonen 1 laavu sits on a small peninsula on the west shore, with dry toilet Kolmiloukkonen 1 käymälä nearby—convenient for a first break. Mid-circuit, the KAUNISHARJU, Luonnonilmiöiden havaintopaikka observation site and Kaunisharju laavu sit on the north-east part of the route; Visit Salla describes the nature-phenomena shelter as a place to watch aurora, midnight sun, or autumn colour out of the wind, a short side trip from the Kaunisharju trail network. Along the south shore, duckboards cross wet ground toward Kolmiloukkonen käymälä 2 and Kolmiloukkonen laavu 2 on the east side of the pond. The wider Kaunisharju trail network—including the Kaunisharjun latu ski trail and the long Aihkipetsi–Ikihonkien wilderness trail—meets this loop at shared junctions; the same national park trail family is covered on the Kolmiloukkosen kierros page on Luontoon.fi.
Retkipaikka’s walk-through notes red and blue route markers on the map, green square paint marks on many trees, and recommends walking counter-clockwise as shown on signage. It also describes a viewing point roughly halfway, stone remains of an early 1900s logging camp (including a stone oven), and Winter War–era field fortification traces on the ridge—machine-gun nest positions, trenches, and scrapes—where interpretation boards stand. Gravel, duckboards, and short steeper steps appear on the steepest harju sections.
Length & route
The trail is about 2.9 km as one continuous circuit around Kolmiloukkonen. Official Salla National Park hiking listings often round the same loop to roughly 3.7–4 km. Expect gravel tread, forest path, and duckboards over wet ground, with short steeper climbs on the esker.
Getting there
The usual start is at Salla National Park’s nature centre on Hautajärventie 111, with parking and route boards in the yard. From Kemijärvi railway station, a bus connection runs toward Sallatunturi; check current timetables on the operator or municipality site before you travel.
Good to know
For national park rules on fires, pets, and litter, rely on Metsähallitus guidance linked from the Kolmiloukkosen kierros page on Luontoon.fi. Visit Salla reminds visitors at the Kaunisharju nature-phenomena site to pack out all waste and dress warmly, as there is no fireplace there.
History
Along the ridge, interpretation boards describe a Winter War field fortification line on Kaunisharju (machine-gun nest, trenches, and scrapes). Near the trail, visible stone remains mark an early 1900s logging camp, including a stone oven by the path.
