For planning stays, road access, and the rental wilderness cabin at the lake, Visit Salla’s Sallan Yhteismetsä pages are a practical starting point. The land manager, Sallan Yhteismetsä, also publishes general hiking and outdoor information for its cooperative forest. Independent outdoor writers have documented the lake setting, the sacred seida stones, and how visitors reach the shore in different seasons. The trail is about 4.3 km end to end on our map and is not a loop: it runs in forest and lakeshore terrain near Lake Suomujärvi in southern Salla, Lapland. Salla sits in eastern Lapland below the fell landscapes around Sallatunturi. Near the north–west shore cluster at Kelkkalahti, a kota and grilling shelter serve day visitors; about 3.6 km along the route you pass Suomujärven grillikatos, a covered grill shelter where you can pause out of the weather—read more on our Suomujärven grillikatos page. The shoreline is irregular, with bays and a larger island (Asentosaari) out on the water. Signage at the seida explains long human use of the area and Sami tradition at the stone offering site by the lake. In summer and autumn the same landscape is threaded with other marked walking and mountain biking options around the lake. In winter the last ploughed road can sit several kilometres short of the shore, so snowmobile or ski access is typical for ice tours; always check ice conditions locally. Where the alignments overlap, a short section of this trail shares the same forest corridor as the long Moottorikelkkareitti Sallatunturi–Suomu snowmobile connection—use caution and yield to machines if you walk brief stretches in snow season.

Getting there

By car from Highway 5 (Kuusamontie), turn at Tonkopuro toward Raakku, then about 7 km along Raakun tie turn right onto a smaller forest road; allow roughly 8 km on that road to the lakeshore kota area at Kelkkalahti. The forest road is not ploughed in winter. Visit Salla notes that in summer you can drive to the Suomujärvi wilderness cabin yard, while in winter the nearest ploughed road is about 8 km away, after which access continues on snow. In snow-free season there is also a long hiking connection of about 20 km one way from Tuulenpesä in Tonkopuro toward Suomujärvi.

Good to know

A reservable wilderness cabin stands at the lake through Sallan Yhteismetsä’s rental programme; booking runs via the linked operator on Visit Salla. Sallan Yhteismetsä maintains grill shelters and campfire sites across its land and asks visitors to carry out litter from unmaintained fire rests. When ice is used for travel, carry standard winter safety gear and local advice.

History

According to on-site interpretation cited at the lake, people have lived in the area since the Stone Age; until the 1700s the district belonged to Kemi Lappi as part of the Kuolajärvi Lapp village. Offerings were made at the seida to water and forest spirits in Sami tradition.
