Angelvaara Trail is a short, demanding hiking line in Tanhua in Savukoski, Lapland, leading through forest to the historic ANGELVAARA palovartijan kämppä on Lower Angelvaara (Alimmainen Angelvaara). The trail is about 1.4 km on our map as one continuous path to that summit shelter. The City of Savukoski describes the full Lower Angelvaara walking circuit in forest at about 3.3 km, with steep climbs and a slippery tread when wet, and classifies it as demanding outdoor terrain. The Tanhua destination page adds the same loop length, the 335 m summit views, a campfire place at the beginning of the route, duckboards on a wet mire section, and driving directions toward the forest-road start. English-language pages on the same site sometimes quote a longer loop figure; the Finnish hiking overview and Tanhua page agree on about 3.3 km for the complete hill walk. Allow roughly one to two hours if you walk the full marked circuit at an easy pace with breaks at the hut and views; the short mapped leg alone is much quicker.

Getting there

By car from Tanhua village, drive about 2.5 km toward Savukoski on the main road, then turn left onto the forest road (Kannusvaarantie on the hiking overview; signs at the junction). Continue about 2.5 km and turn right onto a signed forest road that leads to the campfire starting point. The Tanhua page gives the same pattern with a signposted left onto the forest road from the village road, then a right fork on a forest track to the fireplace area. Mobile coverage can be patchy in Lapland backroads; allow time to navigate forest junctions calmly.

Good to know

The municipality states there is no regular firewood restocking at the hut despite a woodshed. Do not light campfires during forest fire warnings. After rain, expect slippery rock and soil on steep pitches. For winter services and brochures in Tanhua, the village shop is mentioned as a source for route sheets.
