Description

Luirojärvi sauna is a wood-heated public sauna on the shore of Lake Luirojärvi in Urho Kekkonen National Park, deep in the park’s wilderness zone in Lapland north of Sodankylä. Metsähallitus keeps the sauna open for long-distance hikers and skiers; you pay the sauna fee in advance through Eräluvat.fi, and everyone using the sauna is expected to have paid. The building has no electricity: the stove and wash water are heated with firewood, and wash water is carried from the lake and warmed in a cauldron, with basins provided for washing—pack a towel and a headlamp. The sauna is always open, and turns follow a posted three-hour rhythm that begins with a joint session at noon, then rotates women’s and men’s sessions; during joint turns, wear a towel or swimsuit. Private bookings are not available. The yard clusters several well-known shelters—Kuuselankämppä, Luirojärvi varaustupa, Luirojärvi autiotupa, and Rajankämppä—so many people pair a night in one of those with an evening sauna. Approaches are serious mountain journeys: typical ski or hike distances are on the order of tens of kilometres from trailheads such as Kiilopää or Kemihaara, and some summer-only roadheads are only usable when winter roads are not ploughed. Metsähallitus stresses that solid navigation skills are needed and that the sauna is not reachable during spring thaw. In the national park, dogs must be kept on a leash, as set out in the national park instructions and rules. For permit conditions, fees, and the latest schedule notes, rely on Eräluvat.fi and the national park guidance on Luontoon.fi.

Getting there

Reach the sauna on foot or on skis from the park’s long-distance trail network. Metsähallitus quotes indicative distances of about 35 km from Kiilopää and about 56 km from Kemihaara. In summer only, some approaches are possible from Aittajärvi (about 25 km), the Raja-Jooseppi suspension bridge (about 45 km), and Orponen (about 22 km), because roads to those trailheads are not ploughed in winter. Good to know

Older informal price lists sometimes quoted lower per-person sauna fees; the current Eräluvat price list from 1 January 2026 shows 12 euros per person per day. Confirm the fee when you book. Make sure every member of your party has paid the sauna charge before using the facility.
