Description
Aurinkovaarojen Jotos is a long-distance hiking route in Ylitornio, south of the Aavasaksa hill area in Finnish Lapland. On our map the trail is about 49.3 km as one continuous line from the recorded start toward the southern loop of vaaras (forest hills). For route facts, difficulty rating, shelter inventory, trailhead options, and contacts, start with the Aavasaksa Lapland trail page. The same source describes a full circuit of about 50 km from Kainuunkylä school toward Kivivaara and back toward Ainiovaara, with an indicative time of about 48 hours and demanding difficulty.
From the Ainiovaara end, the line crosses a busy outdoor-recreation cluster before the terrain opens onto the vaara landscape. Within the first few kilometres you pass Ainiovaaran kuntoportaat, Ylitornio DiscGolfPark, Ainiovaaran pallokenttä, and Ainiovaaran jäähalli, then Karemajojen frisbeegolfrata—useful context if you are combining a town day with the trail. Farther along, Reväsvaaran ampumarata sits just off the line, and around 13.8 km from the start you reach Kainuunkylän kaukalo at the Kainuunkylä school area, the alternative start mentioned on the official page. The route shares ground with Ainiovaaran luontopolku, Ainiovaaran valaistu latu, Ainiovaaran lumetettu latu, Ainiovaaran valaistu kuntopolku, Mustin lenkki (ski and running variants), and—farther south—longer snowmobile connections toward Aavasaksa and Pello, where the line intersects the wider Tornio–Ylitornio–Pello snowmobile corridor and passes places such as Aavasaksan Keisarinmaja and Kruununkierros laavu near Crown Park.
The trail is marked with white blazes; independent walkers report newer white posts on some sections, while others note gaps where navigation needs a map or GPS. Terrain includes steep climbs and rocky ground on the vaaras, with boardwalks across the largest boulder fields such as Pirunpelto. KAUKOKAIPUU’s walk-through gives a vivid sense of the Kivivaara lean-to area and views over the Tornionjoki valley forest, and Retkipaikka’s account adds practical pacing notes for a long summer day on the southern half. Mellan Kiipijät maintains the reservable Eholampi (Ehojärvi) scout lodge on the lake shore: the building fits larger groups, has electricity, a sizeable sauna and grill kota, and water carried to the hut—booking and rules are managed separately from the day trail.
Lapland is known for long midsummer daylight; Ylitornio sits in the Tornio River valley, and the vaaras here rise above 200 m with views toward the national landscape of the valley. Carry enough water for exposed ridges, check weather, and reserve the reservable hut well ahead if you plan to use it.
Length & route
The trail is about 49.3 km as one continuous line on our map. The Aavasaksa Lapland page describes a full circuit of roughly 50 km between Kainuunkylä school, Kivivaara, and Ainiovaara, with the same overall character. Use our GPX distance as the primary figure; brochure rounding to about 50 km is normal on long networked routes.
Getting there
You can start from Ainiovaara ski and outdoor centre or from Kainuunkylä school, as listed on the official trail page. The GPX start on our map sits in the Ainiovaara–Alkkula area; if you drive to the lake end of the southern loop, Retkipaikka’s account used parking at the Ehojärvi shore before climbing toward Viisavaara. Download the route map PDF from the municipality’s outdoor materials when planning forest road access (linked from local tourism pages). Use a detailed topographic map or GPS in addition to paint marks, especially where markers are thin.
Good to know
Shelters along the route include one reservable hut at Eholampi (Ehojärvi), two wilderness cabins, two kota, four lean-tos, and two campfire sites according to the tourism page. Reservations for Eholampi go through the contact published on Aavasaksa Lapland (phone and email); Mellan Kiipijät describes the building’s capacity, sauna, kota, and practical water and toilet arrangements for group stays. The trail is free to walk; hut use is separate and fee-based where applicable. Check the official page before you travel for the latest on markers and access.
Itinerary
Day 1 (example): Ainiovaara outdoor cluster to Kivivaara lean-to area—roughly the first 10–12 km of the southern arc depending on your start point, with water and breaks at forest shelters. Day 2: Continue across Pirunpelto boardwalks toward Porokämppä, Kotarova, and Utsun eräkämppä sectors described in trip write-ups, then climb Ehovaara and descend toward Ehojärvi if you close the loop to the lake shore. Adjust daily distances to your pace; the tourism page budgets about 48 hours for the full circuit.
