Description

Orhinselänniemi accessible trail is a very short barrier-free loop of about 0.1 km on a forested sand spit in Lake Miekojärvi near Ylitornio in western Lapland. Metsähallitus publishes it on Luontoon.fi as the accessible shore route at the Orhinselänniemi services. The niemi is a popular summer destination with a long sand beach, tent-friendly clearings, and shared day-use structures. The trail is about 0.1 km and forms a small loop at the Orhinselänniemi kota and beach services. The walk from the road end to the niemi is a separate forest section of roughly 2.5 km on Metsähallitus nature trails starting near Kaaranneskoskentie 1132, Ylitornio. Allow only a few minutes for the accessible loop itself; combined with the approach hike, plan roughly an hour or more with breaks. The connecting Miekojärvi–Vietonen hiking trail is about 23 km as a whole and is demanding in sections; only the final approach matches this easy day-use strip.

Getting there

Leave your car at the nature trail start along Kaaranneskoskentie 1132 in Ylitornio; you cannot drive right to Orhinselänniemi, but there is space to park off the sand road near the trailhead. Follow the Metsähallitus-guided path roughly 2.5 km to the sand spit; boots are wise because tread can stay wet and muddy after rain. In summer you can also land by boat from Lake Miekojärvelle if you are paddling or boating in the area. Check Luontoon.fi for any updates before you set out.

Good to know

Forest fire rules apply: open fires follow Metsähallitus and rescue-service warnings, and during forest-fire alerts you may be restricted to designated shelters. Summer nights can be bright under the midnight sun but insects vary with weather; bring net or repellent as you would for any Lappish lake beach.
