This ride is a compact mountain-biking spur of about 2,1 km in Lieksa, North Karelia, in the Änäkäinen–Saarijärvi part of the wider Karhunpolku hiking and mountain-biking corridor. For rules, etiquette, and the full 140 km Karhunpolku mountain-biking description, start from Luontoon.fi’s Karhunpolku (mountain biking) page and Visit Karelia’s Karhunpolku mountain biking article. The City of Lieksa now maintains key Änäkäinen recreation structures—among them Saarijärvi laavu, cooking shelter, and kota—and the western side of the Saarijärvi circuit, which is explicitly tied into the Karhunpolku network the city already maintains.
Lieksa Travel places Änäkäinen on the historic Rukajärventie–Salpa battle landscape and notes a short ring path around Saarijärvi (Iso-Änäkäinen) at the north side of the area, with military-history foot loops elsewhere on the site. On this ride, about half a kilometre from the start you reach Jongunjoen laavu, a natural early break before the line continues toward the Saarijärvi shore area. In the last section, roughly 1,7 km from the start, the Saarijärvi cluster gathers a laavu, a northern campfire spot, and dry toilets nearby—enough for a snack stop or a longer pause before you join bigger day routes. The Karhunpolku backbone in this region is described as marked forest riding with duckboards, roots, and steeper ridge pitches in places; MTBreitti.fi’s Karhunpolku write-up stresses orange paint/blaze markings, map discipline, and how slippery duckboards become in wet weather. Even on a short leg, carry a printed or offline map, mind other trail users, and stay on marked cycling lines where the network requires it.
From Jongunjoen laavu you can think about longer links that share the same landscape: Karhunpolku yhdyspolku connects toward the Bear Trail network near Jongunjoki, and Jongunjoen melontareitti follows the river corridor for paddlers if you are combining sports on another day.
Length & route
About 2,1 km as one continuous mountain-biking leg on our map between the start co-ordinates near Jongunjoki and the Saarijärvi shore facilities. Karhunpolku as a whole is roughly 135–140 km and is normally ridden in several day stages; Visit Karelia’s stage example lists an Änäkäinen–Teljo day among those legs.
Getting there
Lieksa is reached by train and coach from Joensuu; Visit Karelia lists Teljo and Jongunjoki access notes and links to transport PDFs for Lieksa hiking routes. Use Lieksa’s Infogis map service for parking and approach roads when you plan the final kilometres. Karhunpolku’s north end at Teljo has a parking and rest area beside the bridge on highway 524 in the wider network description.
Good to know
Open-fire rules follow Finnish warnings: check forest-fire bulletins before lighting campfires. Mobile coverage has blind spots on long Karhunpolku legs; short spurs can still dip behind ridges. Yield to hikers where Karhunpolku is shared.
History
Änäkäinen’s forest-lined tank traps and battle works belong to the wider Salpa and Continuation War story of the road known as Rukajärventie; tourism material combines those sites with nature recreation on the same forest land.
Where to rent bikes
Along the wider Karhunpolku itinerary many riders stage days through Ruunaa; Ruunaan Matkailu publishes E-fatbike hire there at about €40 for three hours and about €70 for eight hours including a helmet. If you are staying closer to Koli National Park, Polar Adventures lists bike hire in their bikes and equipment hire category.
Guided tours & Experiences
Polar Adventures runs guided e-bike trips and other outdoor programmes around Koli and North Karelia. See Polar Adventures programme services for current programme types and how to book.
Karhunpolku and its spurs are described as marked with orange paint markings or posts in terrain descriptions for the wider route. Always carry a map—some bypass options are not marked in the field.
