Description

Kolinuuron Circuit is a short but demanding summer loop in Lieksa, North Karelia, winding through Kolinuuro—the deep gorge below Ukko-Koli in Koli National Park. The trail is about 3.2 km on our map as a closed ring, made for hikers who already enjoy steep rock steps, roots and narrow forest tread, and for families who want a geology-themed outing rather than a gentle lakeside stroll. Metsähallitus describes the renewed loop as a geological treasure hunt: clockwise is the recommended direction, with red circle markings along the tread, interactive “taikarasti” tasks and a story built around Koli-bedrock kyaniitti—something to photograph and learn about on site, not collect. The gorge bottom is lush and sheltered; climbs to Pieni-Koli and the high viewpoints bring the quartzite and gneiss contact into view in ways casual visitors rarely expect. You begin in the busy service cluster around Kolin luontokeskus Ukko on Ylä-Kolintie: Koli pysäköintialue 1 and Koli pysäköintialue 2 ja 3 serve most summit visitors, Ukko-Kolin laskettelukeskus and Koli Relax Spa sit beside the same yard, and the signed Huippujen Kierros ring is only a few steps away if you later want the classic Ukko–Akka–Paha panorama circuit. Length & route

The trail is about 3.2 km on our map as a clockwise-leaning summer loop around Kolinuuro, not a point-to-point link. Visitor-facing summaries quote roughly 3.1 km with on the order of 100 m of climbing and the same amount of descent between the lowest gorge floor and the highest viewpoint along the ring. Expect long sets of rock steps, short duckboard spans that turn slick after rain, and repeated switches between shadowed spruce–deciduous slopes and open rock ledges. The loop is intended for snow-free conditions only because the geological storyboards and cyanite outcrops are not maintained as a winter walking attraction.

Getting there

Treat Ukko-Koli as the access pole: drive to upper parking on Ylä-Kolintie—Koli pysäköintialue 1 and Koli pysäköintialue 2 ja 3 on our map—or follow Koli.fi guidance for combining the village, harbour, scenic lift from Rantatie 27 and walking connectors such as Sataman polku before you pick up the red-ring gorge markings beside Kolin luontokeskus Ukko. Joensuu is the nearest rail hub; coaches and resort shuttles listed on Koli.fi are the usual continuation for visitors without a car.

Good to know

Allow about two to three hours even though the distance is short; the vertical gain and photo stops add up quickly on summer weekends. Metsähallitus targets school-age children and families for the renewed storyline, and suggests under-sixes may find the full loop taxing. Mobile coverage can be patchy along the gorge walls—carry what you need for self-rescue and keep emergency numbers in mind. Paid guided outings from Äksyt Ämmät include park use fees in their listed prices when booked as a package.

History

Older interpretive materials treated Kolinuuron kierros mainly as a geological nature trail. In the 2020s renewal, Metsähallitus reframed the loop as a family-facing treasure hunt tied to Emmi Jormalainen’s cyanite mascot illustrations while keeping the deeper-time narrative about ancient shorelines, Baltic Shield bedrock movements and the gorge’s ice-sculpted form. Beetles LIFE funding also refreshed wider habitat signage along the themed posts.
