Description

For marked summer trails, campfire rules, and service updates in Koli National Park, the Koli hiking section on Luontoon.fi is the right place to start. Visit North Karelia’s “Kolin kaunis kolmikko” route card describes an easy circuit around the Mattila, Ollila, and Turula homesteads on mostly wide, gravelled tracks—helpful background for the same cultural landscape this short link crosses. The trail is about 0.5 km and runs point-to-point between the Mattila farm area and the Vaaralanaho rest spot in Lieksa, in North Karelia. It is a practical connector: you can reach Mattila kaivo near the start, pass Turula telttailualue with Turula kuivakäymälä and two Turulan tulentekopaikka fireplaces roughly mid-route, and finish at Vaaralanaho tulentekopaikka and Vaaralanaho kuivakäymälä. The Turula campfire place has a separate service entry among the park’s maintained structures. The line sits in the middle of longer day-hiking options. It shares nodes with Kolin kesäkahvilakierros, the Koli segment of the UKK Trail (Lieksa), Kylän Polku, Kasken kierros, and Old Forest Trail (Vanhan metsän polku), so you can stitch it into a coffee-shop loop, a UKK section, or a harbour-to-hill itinerary without backtracking along the main village road. Luontopolkumies walked Kasken kierros and highlights the Vaaralanaho stop as a natural break before the junction toward Turula. Ollila pysäköintialue is the nearest large parking in our data but sits a few hundred metres south-west of the polyline; many visitors combine parking at Ylä-Kolintie 12 or harbour-side lots with the wider Mattila–Ollila–Turula network instead. Length & route

The trail is about 0.5 km point-to-point from the Mattila-side start toward Vaaralanaho. Allow roughly 10–20 minutes for easy walking without long breaks. The same forest track network is part of Visit Karelia’s roughly 3.7 km “Kolin kaunis kolmikko” cultural circuit around Mattila, Ollila, and Turula on wide, gravelled paths.

Getting there

Visit North Karelia recommends starting from the Mattila, Ollila, and Turula parking at Ylä-Kolintie 12, or using the sports field parking as an alternative. Ollila pysäköintialue is slightly west of this polyline in our map data but works for the wider farm area. Harbour-side parking is practical if you link Sataman polku or climb from Koli village on other trails.

Good to know

When national forest or grass fire warnings are in effect, open fires may be banned even at maintained fireplaces; confirm the current rule on Luontoon.fi or on-site signs. The Mattila courtyard hosts a seasonal café and other visitor services during the busiest summer weeks; opening hours and bookings are set by the operator.

History

Luontopolkumies notes that forest conservation around the Vaarala holding was debated in the early 1900s and that Metsähallitus leadership eventually stopped planned fellings and state purchases consolidated a large land area here.
