Description

The Nälmänpuro–Suomu trail is about 4.3 km one way through Patvinsuo National Park, linking the Nälmänjoki–Nälmänpuro rest area with the Suomu visitor hub by Lake Suomunjärvi. Metsähallitus describes trails, structures, seasonal access (including cable ferries elsewhere in the park network), and current restrictions on the Patvinsuo National Park pages on Luontoon.fi. Length & route

The trail is about 4.3 km as one point-to-point walk between the Nälmänjoki facilities and the Suomu parking and service buildings. It is not a loop. The wider Patvinkierto ring is about 25 km with four camping areas listed for that route, including Nälmänpuro.

Getting there

The Nälmänjoki end is reached along Patvinsuo’s marked routes—often as part of Patvinkierto retkeilyreitti from larger car parks such as Lahnalammen pysäköintialue—or from the Suomu direction if you walk this segment in reverse. The Suomu end sits at Suomu pysäköintialue by the nature-tourism cluster; Visit Karelia gives regional driving context via Lieksa and route 73, and directs to Luontoon.fi for the official map links. There is no public transport into the park.

Good to know

Check Nälmänjoki cable-ferry operating periods when planning legs that use Patvinkierto’s river crossings; Visit Karelia reminds hikers to verify ferry, cyanobacteria, and other advance notices on Luontoon.fi. Open-fire bans apply during wildfire warnings and in strong wind. Expect uneven footing and slippery duckboards after rain on bog connectors throughout the park.
