Description
Matkalampi Trail is a blue-marked forest ride in Liperi’s Kinttupolut network—about 65 km across seven linked circuits east of Joensuu, designed for snow-free mountain biking, walking, and trail running on mostly natural tread. The City of Liperi publishes maps, GPX files, rules, and any forestry or maintenance notices for the whole system on its Kinttupolut pages. Visit Karelia describes Matkalampi as one of the prettiest needle-carpet sections of the network, with shoreline riding past Sompalampi and a highlight in the Kotisalo nature reserve beside Lake Hovatta. Metsähallitus lists the same route on Luontoon.fi for national outdoor planning.
On this map the ride is about 15.7 km as one continuous route and is not a closed loop. After a forest start you reach Vaaralammen kota around 4 km from a typical beginning—a kota with a fireplace and firewood where Kinttupolut / Pahakala Trail meets the same rest point, so expect hikers and other cyclists at the junction. Farther on, Sompalammen laavu sits near Matkalammentie with a lean-to, fireplace, and firewood; Kinttupolut / Jyri Trail shares this crossing, so the area can be busy on fine weekends. Between shelters the tread mixes needle-carpet singletrack, old track beds, and short gravel connectors on Matkalammentie and Vaiviontie as the municipality describes. Near Ylämylly the route passes Honkalampi’s school and recreation cluster—ball fields, tennis, and the local sports park—where Honkalammen valaistu kuntorata also runs—before finishing at Honkalammen uimaranta on Honkaranta, a swimming beach suited to cooling off after the kilometres. Kotisalo’s paths around Hovatta add old pines, a small swimming jetty, and berries in good seasons; Visit Karelia links a short film about the reserve. Liperi lies in North Karelia; Ylämylly has shops and cafés within easy reach of the trail.
If you need a bike locally, SoiRela in Jyrinkylä rents fat e-bikes near other Kinttupolut corridors.
Length & route
The trail is about 15.7 km. Tourism pages often round the same line to roughly 15.8–16 km. Expect forest paths and old track beds with a few kilometres on gravel roads (Matkalammentie, Vaiviontie). Visit Karelia quotes on the order of 250 m of ascent and descent, a high point near 120 m and a low near 84 m on their profile, and classifies the outing as moderate overall with mostly easy footing aside from some rocky steps. Wet weather makes roots and stone tread slippery.
Getting there
By car from Joensuu, drive Highway 9 toward Kuopio for about 13 km, exit at the Ylämylly junction, and choose one of the signed Kinttupolut car parks. The City of Liperi lists Honkalampi beach (Ylämylly) and Sompalampi on Matkalammentie as primary start points for Matkalampi Trail, both with free parking, dry toilets, and info boards; Sompalampi adds a campfire site. Honkalammen uimaranta uses address Honkaranta 2e. Pärnävaara outdoor centre (Urheilutie 5A) is another regional access point with parking and services; walking or riding distance to Matkalampi depends on which link you use. Regular buses run from Joensuu to Ylämylly; the stop area is within about a kilometre of the trail—check current timetables with Joensuu region public transport.
Good to know
Mountain biking on Kinttupolut requires off-road skills and a suitable bike; walking and trail running need basic outdoor skills. Dogs are allowed on a leash; horses are not allowed on marked Kinttupolut routes. Light campfires only at signed sites, with firewood supplied at listed kota and laavu locations unless temporarily depleted after busy weekends. Trails cross forestry and hunting land—respect logging, hunting seasons, and temporary detours. In October 2025 the City of Liperi noted forest work at Pärnävaara that required avoiding parts of Surmilampi Trail and Heinälampi Trail near the lit ski trail; check the city page before combining branches. Riding or walking on groomed ski trails in winter is prohibited except where signed winter connectors meet the ski corridor.
History
The Kotisalo nature reserve beside Lake Hovatta, which Matkalampi Trail crosses, was established with support from Luonnonperintösäätiö, private donors, and companies; Visit Karelia highlights its old-growth pine stands and quiet atmosphere.
