Description

Pesävaara Trail is a demanding branch of Liperi’s Kinttupolut network in North Karelia. The City of Liperi maintains the full trail system (about 65 km across seven linked circuits) and publishes GPX files, safety rules, and maintenance notices on its Kinttupolut pages. Visit North Karelia hosts a dedicated Pesävaara page—produced with Liperi—with step-by-step access from Veteläsuontie 4, recommended clockwise travel on the forest loop, and practical safety notes for wet rock and roots. The hiking route is about 7.4 km. Official pages often round to roughly 7.3–7.5 km for the same line. The trail shares its line with the mountain-biking Pesävaara branch, so expect two-way traffic and give way where sight lines are short. The route is classified as demanding: it climbs and drops about 210 m in total, with a high point near 141 m and a low point near 82 m on the published profile. Terrain alternates by section—roughly two kilometres of rockier, more technical singletrack, about three kilometres of somewhat easier forest path, and roughly two kilometres of easier forest roads and cart tracks—through spruce stands, pine ridges, and younger mixed forest. Glacial hollows (suppa pits) appear along the ridges as deep depressions formed when ice blocks melted into the soil. Early on from the Vaivio side you pass Salmilammen uimapaikka, Vaivio—a swimming spot with an address on Veteläsuontie 4—where many people pause before the climb. Farther along, near the Heinälampi ponds, Heinälampi, laavu ja kotus offers a lean-to shelter and kota for breaks; dry toilets are available at the maintained rest points in this area. The hiking route is about 7.4 km. Municipal pages often list about 7.5 km with GPX for this branch, and tourism copy often rounds to about 7.3 km—small differences are normal for the same trail file. Expect mostly narrow singletrack with rocks and roots, short easier forest-road connectors, and a noticeably hilly elevation profile for the distance.

Getting there

The main trailhead for Pesävaara is at Veteläsuontie 4, 83450 Vaivio, with an information board and red markings leading from the parking area toward the trail. By car from Joensuu, take Highway 9 toward Kuopio for about 10 km, leave at junction 21, and follow signs toward Pärnävaara Sports Centre; from that direction you can also reach the wider Kinttupolut network, while Vaivio gives the most direct start for this branch. Free parking is available at Pärnävaara Sports Centre’s lower or upper car parks if you approach from the sports-centre side. Public transport from Joensuu runs to Jyrinkylä; from the Jyrinlenkki terminus it is about 900 m along Urheilutie to the sports centre —check current timetables on Joensuu region public transport.

Good to know

On Kinttupolut, dogs must be on a leash; horses are not allowed on the marked routes. Light campfires only at signed campfire sites. Trails cross forestry and hunting land—respect temporary harvesting work and hunting. In October 2025 the municipality noted forest management near Pärnävaara that could affect access to Surmilampi and Heinälampi branches close to the lit ski trail; check the city page before combining those connectors. Mountain biking requires skills and a suitable bike; walkers need basic outdoor skills. Winter walking or cycling on groomed ski trails is prohibited except where dedicated winter-bike connectors are posted.
