The Apajalahti Nature Trail is about 2.7 km on Varpasalo in Rääkkylä, North Karelia, winding through private nature reserves where the best-known section is a fine common-alder swamp, plus rock outcrops that can be slippery when wet. Rääkkylä sits in North Karelia on northern Lake Saimaa; Varpasalo is one of the municipality’s large inland islands linked toward Oravisalo across Ihalansalmi. Getting there

Joensuu is about 63 km away by road. By car, reach the Varpasalo side of the Ihalansalmi bridge (Varpasalontie, Oravisalo postal area in visitor listings), then continue about 2.5 km, turn right onto Häikänniementie, and drive roughly 400 m to the trail start. Visit Karelia lists the Ihalansalmi bridge as one of the Saaristo Trail access points with on-site guidance boards when you cycle or drive the wider network.
