City of Raahe – Vihannin kinttupolut+
Description
This route stitches together the Vihanti kinttupolut network with the Kymmenenkylänpolku link toward Honkamaja in Oulainen in North Ostrobothnia. The City of Raahe describes the kinttupolut as roughly 100 km of maintained walking routes between Vihanti villages, marked in blue with history boards along the way. The volunteer-led Vihannin kinttupolut project site documents more than 120 km of cleared trail, rest stops about every 5–10 km, overnight possibilities on each village loop, and winter use mainly on ski tracks for some sections. Kymmenenkylänpolku is the roughly 8 km connector from Honkamaja into the network, with a half-kota by Kattilalampi (Lampinkallio), a lean-to at Eteläselänlampi, duckboards in two places, and wood sheds at both stops; the terrain is variable and forestry roads may still show slash from 2019 harvesting. The trail is about 168.2 km end to end as one continuous line on our map.
Haapavesi lies at the heart of the same countrysideideide, and Visit Haapavesi notes that the small Rasvakosken kämppä wilderness hut beside Pirnesoja sits on Haapavesi land while the kinttupolut pass the site—useful if you are planning a long traverse toward the Hirvineva area.
From the northwest, Kauniskankaan puolikota and Kapasenkallion puolikota appear within the first handful of kilometres, then Riitun puolikota ja WC and Penikkalammen laavu before Myllykosken laavu - Vihanti and Kivikankaan laavu - Raahe guide you toward the Vihanti–Raahe forest mosaic. Ahmaojan laavu ja WC sits deeper in the woods before the line drops toward Kirkkojärven uimaranta and the sports cluster around Vihannin urheilukenttä. Vareskota marks the transition toward open harju ground; Kattilalammen kota and the Honkamajan laavu, Honkamajan kota area, Honkamajan kuntoportaat and Honkamajan frisbeegolfrata bundle the Honkamaja end of Kymmenenkylänpolku with the shorter Oulainen–Honkamaja retkeilyreitti and winter latu connections.
South and east of Honkamaja, Eteläselänlammen laavu, Höynäysmaja, Lampinsaaren uimaranta and Kiviharjun laavu lead toward Mutterimaja - Ilveskorpi and Rantanurkan laavu; Ahmastupa, Hirvimaja and Viiankankaan laavu sit along the drier forest and mire edge toward Rasvakosken kämppä. Piipsanlehdon kota and Meijerinlanssin laavu break up the long forest haul toward Lumijärven laavu and Mäkiahon laavu near the southeast extreme.
Where the geometry touches Ukonkantti, summer riders following the long-distance Flatland Route cycle ring share some of the same ground; Visit Liminka outlines the 320 km coastal–inland ring that loops through neighbouring municipalities and can be combined mentally with day stages here if you mix bike and hike.
Length & route
The trail is about 168.2 km as one continuous path on our map. The City of Raahe quotes roughly 100 km for the maintained kinttupolut walking network between villages; the project’s own route list notes more than 120 km of finished trail with dense rest spacing. Kymmenenkylänpolku adds about 8 km between Honkamaja and the village network. Your chosen start direction determines whether you begin in the northwest kinttupolut sector or at Honkamaja; either way expect forest roads, path, duckboards on mires and blue paint marking on the kinttupolut sections. Winter skiers use overlapping latu corridors on several segments while the connector from Honkamaja follows an existing ski-track base before branching marked summer trail.
Getting there
The City of Raahe lists practical parking for the network at Vihanti library (Ukonkantti), Kirkkotie 16, 86400 Vihanti, and at Alpuanharju ski lodge, Hiihtopaikantie 107, 86460 Alpua, and links the wider trail map from the same nature-trails page. Kymmenenkylänpolku is described as starting from Honkamaja on Oulainen town trails; combine that with the project’s map page for connector wayfinding. Long traverses are easiest if someone drops you at one end and picks you up at the other, or if you use regional rail and bus access between Oulainen, Vihanti and Ruukki when planning the Flatland ring or coastal return.
Good to know
Treat firewood sheds as communal courtesy: carry a saw or emergency fuel if sites are busy after winter. After forestry work, expect temporary roughness on forest roads. Hirvinevan bird-rich mire loops connect conceptually to the Hirvinevan kierros mentioned on the project site as a three-municipality winter ski tour between Raahe, Haapavesi and Oulainen. Dogs are not specially regulated on the pages cited; follow everyman’s rights and keep dogs controlled near farms and nesting time. For the latest grooming on ski overlaps or city-maintained hubs, check Oulainen and Raahe outdoor pages before a winter start.
History
