Description

Siiponjoki nature trail is about 19 km in Kalajoki in North Ostrobothnia, following pine ridges, rocky patches, and wetland edges down to the Siiponjoki River. The river lies in a shifting sand landscape and cuts meanders with steep banks; occasional riverside groves break up the brighter pine heath. Visit Kalajoki describes it as an all-year hiking route where part of the line also suits mountain biking or fat biking if you are confident on sand and roots, and winter visitors may use a classic ski connection from Tapion Tupa toward the Särkijärvi kota when snow and grooming allow. The Siiponjoki Natura site covers about 419 hectares of dune ridges, meanders, floodplain forest, and stream habitat downstream toward the Rahja archipelago sea area.

Getting there

Visit Kalajoki lists Tapion Tupa at Matkailutie 3 in Hiekkasärkät as the main start and end point (phone 08 466 622) and points to Kalajoki’s route map PDF from the same article. Shorter outings often start from the Pleuna side; separate listings describe a family route from the Pleunantie 379 area toward Pleunan laavu. If you approach from the Kourinjärvi side by road, bloggers have parked along Kourinjärventie and joined the marked path near Kourinkallion laavu. Good to know

History

The Siiponjoki Natura 2000 description explains that the dune–ridge landscape rose from the sea roughly 2 000–3 800 years ago and has since been reshaped by wind and waves, creating stacked beach ridges in the south and broad dune fields farther north while the river cuts new meanders and oxbow lakes in the sand.
