Description

Valtavaara Peak Trail (Valtavaaran huiputus) is a demanding day hike in Kuusamo in North Ostrobothnia, in the Valtavaara–Pyhävaara Nature Reserve east of Ruka. The trail is about 5.2 km long as shown on our map and climbs to some of the highest natural terrain in the region, with a big vertical gain packed into a short distance. Ruka.fi places the route in the wider Ruka–Kuusamo trail network and explains how it relates to the Karhunkierros landscape and other marked day hikes in the fells. Retkipaikka carries Luontopolkumies Mika Markkanen’s 2024 walk-through—useful for how the stone steps, views, and wet sections feel on the ground. You begin from Saaruan P-alue on the Itä-Ruka side. The path follows the Karhunkierros line part of the way, then branches on a circular line up and around Valtavaara. The climb is steep in places: stone steps, rope handrails on the steepest pitches, and rocky tread underfoot alternate with forest and mire, and the return side uses long duckboard stretches that can stay damp after rain. Marking in the terrain is green paint. About 1.2 km from the start you reach the Valtavaaranlampi cluster: Valtavaaranlampi taukokatos and the nearby Valtavaaranlampi laituri sit by the pond, with Valtavaaranlampi käymälä a few steps away—natural break spots before the final push. Higher up, Valtavaaran päivätupa sits at the summit area in the old fire warden’s building; a little below on the east side, Valtavaaran kota and Valtavaaran kota käymälä offer shelter and a fireplace for a meal stop. The top opens views toward Ruka, surrounding lakes, and the wider Oulanka–Karhunkierros country to the north—on a clear day you can orient using distant fells and the ski resort silhouette. The same Saarua parking area is shared with other marked routes: Rukan kierros and Rukan ympäristön maastopyöräilyreitit pass through this trailhead, and Rukan ympärysreitti runs nearby—handy if you are combining a resort day with a short summit outing. In winter, separate snow routes and ski infrastructure apply; check Luontoon.fi for the winter line and Ruka.fi for snowshoe and ski options around Valtavaara.

Length & route

The trail is about 5.2 km as one continuous hiking line on our map, returning to Saarua. Official and guidebook-style descriptions often round to roughly 5.6–5.8 km depending on how the circuit is measured. The climb is stiff for the distance: a large share of the elevation comes in the first kilometre, with stone staircases and short rope-assisted sections on the steepest pitches. The loop is usually walked clockwise from the trail fork near the parking approach.

Getting there

Drive to Itä-Ruka and the Saarua parking area (Saaruan P-alue) off Ahon Jussintie; Retkipaikka’s walk-through notes the lot is large but the trailhead can be easy to miss from the road—following signs toward the eastern Ruka trailheads helps. The signed start sits next to the main Saarua trail hub, where summer hiking, bike routes, and winter ski and snowmobile lines also meet the forest. Coordinates for the parking are about 66.1729, 29.1652. Public transport reaches central Ruka year-round, but onward links to Itä-Ruka are limited in summer—most visitors arrive by car or resort shuttles; confirm current options on Ruka.fi.

Good to know

The route lies in a strict nature reserve: stay on marked trails, avoid shortcuts, and follow any seasonal restrictions posted by Metsähallitus. Mountain biking and motorised use follow separate rules from foot travel—use the reserve pages and Ruka.fi for which lines allow bikes or winter machines. In snowy conditions the summer line is not always the one in use; Luontoon.fi lists a separate winter route where applicable. Sturdy footwear is advisable; after rain, expect wet duckboards and rooty tread. Dogs should be kept on a leash whenever the reserve rules require it.
