For up-to-date information on the Kylmäluoma state hiking area—rules, services, and how the trail network fits together—start with the Metsähallitus pages on Luontoon.fi. Visit Taivalkoski Region describes the main day-hike loops from the visitor hub, storm-related re-routing after 2021, and how shore and forest circuits connect around Iso-Pajuluoma.
The trail runs in Taivalkoski in North Ostrobothnia. Kylmäluoma Shore Trail is about 2.5 km point-to-point along the shore of Iso-Pajuluoma, the large fishing and swimming lake beside Kylmäluoma visitor centre and camping. It is an easy, family-friendly strand to move between the west and east sides of the bay: campfire spots, swimming and boat jetties, the camping field, and the kota and Sarvi boat dock at the caravan area. The Hossa and Kylmäluoma visitor site notes easy angling access and boat rental on Iso-Pajuluoma for visitors who want to combine a short walk with time on the water.
From the west-shore fireplace at Iso-Pajuluoma, länsipuoli, tulipaikka the path soon passes Kylmäluoman retkeilykeskuksen frisbeegolfrata and the Iso-Pajuluoma, uimalaituri and Iso-Pajukuma invalaituri jetties—practical places to swim or launch small craft. Kylmäluoma Campsite sits just inland from the same shoreline. About halfway along, Iso-Pajuluoma, itäpuoli, tulipaikka offers another campfire pause before you reach Iso Pajuluoma rantapolku 15 and Iso pajuluoma rantapolku 18 and, at the east end of this segment, Kylmäluoman leirintäalueen kota and Kylmäluoman leirintäalue, Sarvi, laituri.
This line sits inside a dense knot of longer marked routes. Luontopolku Puuska, Hukanharjun hurrikaani, Paulan puhuri, and Myrskyn jälkeen all start from the same visitor and camping complex; Iso-Pajuluoma yhdyspolku rantaan is a very short link toward the beach facilities. For a multi-day link toward town, Kylmäluoma–Taivalkoski continues west from the same landscape. Retkipaikka’s walk-through of the wider nature-trail network highlights views over Iso-Pajuluoma from the esker ridges nearby and the mix of pine forest, history boards, and maintained fireplaces that characterise the area.
After the 2021 Paula storm, Metsähallitus re-lined and re-marked many Kylmäluoma routes; check the latest notices before you set out.
Length & route
The trail is about 2.5 km as one shore connection along Iso-Pajuluoma. It is point-to-point, not a loop: you can walk it in either direction between the west- and east-shore service clusters or return the same way. Nearby marked loops such as Luontopolku Puuska (about 4.5 km) and Hukanharjun hurrikaani (about 6 km) use the same hub if you want a longer circuit.
Getting there
Day-hike circuits at Kylmäluoma start from the visitor centre and camping area on Pajuluomantie 20 in Tyrövaara; the same arrival point serves this shore segment. Use the official pages for the current parking layout and any temporary closures after storm maintenance rather than relying on informal coordinates alone.
Good to know
Luontoon.fi publishes area-wide rules for camping, dogs, and fires; read the current instructions before your trip. Visit Taivalkoski notes that storm damage was extensive and that signage and maps were updated on a multi-year schedule—carry a current trail map from the centre if you combine several routes.
Where to rent equipment
Canoes, kayaks, boats, and SUP boards can be rented from Kylmäluoma visitor centre reception; see the destination service pages on Luontoon.fi and the Hossa–Kylmäluoma visitor site for seasonal hours.
Walk in either direction along the lake; choose the end that matches where you parked at the visitor and camping area.
