Description

Telkkämäki hiking loop is about 0.2 km of easy walking in Kaavi, North Savo, in a tight circuit beside Telkkämäki pysäköintialue on Metsähallitus-managed Telkkämäen luonnonsuojelualue. The path introduces the slash-and-burn heritage landscape around Telkkämäen perinnetila and ties in with longer marked routes from the same trailhead. City of Kaavi lists the companion loops Laidunkierto and Rietulan kierto plus free year-round access to the reserve, and notes that hunting, camping, and open fires are not allowed while berry and mushroom picking are. Starting from Telkkämäki pysäköintialue, the short ring reaches Telkkämäki lähde and visitor amenities along the way; dry toilets are available near the farm area so you can combine a few minutes of walking with reading the outdoor exhibition in the barn side room when the heritage yard is staffed. From the same hub you can join Rietulan kierto for about 1.9 km through historic and present-day kaski scenery with interpretation along the trail, use Telkkämäki kärrytie for an even shorter link in the yard, or pick up Northeast Savo hiking route – Kaavi section (Koillis-Savon retkeilyreitti - Kaavi) when you want a much longer regional day. City of Kaavi groups Telkkämäen retkeilypolku together with Rietulan kierto as Metsähallitus-maintained outdoor offerings and points walkers toward Retkikarta for the regional trail network. Wild Karelian Outdoor has written about the atmosphere of kaski smoke and traditional practice days at the heritage farm, which pairs well with a short walk in the surrounding reserve. Terrain is mostly level meadow, pasture, and deciduous forest typical of restored slash-and-burn landscapes rather than steep climbs.

Length & route

The trail is about 0.2 km as one closed loop on the map. The same parking area is the access point for Rietulan kierto (about 1.9 km), the shorter Telkkämäki kärrytie link, and the Kaavi section of the Koillis-Savon retkeilyreitti long-distance line.

Getting there

Luontoon.fi places Telkkämäen luonnonsuojelualue north of highway 17 at Kaiturintie 419, 73600 Kaavi, with signage from Kaavi church village and along the Kaavi–Juankoski road. Visitor parking is about 200 m from the farmstead; the destination is not winter-maintained. Telkkämäki pysäköintialue is the practical trailhead for this loop and the linked routes.

Good to know

Summer weekday access to farm buildings and staff is usually possible from early June to late August when workers are on site; phone +358 40 0346469 during that window. The barn’s small room hosts a photo display about present-day kaski burning even when houses are locked. Respect grazing fences and closed gates noted in Metsähallitus guidance for the approach road. Berry and mushroom picking are allowed on the reserve; hunting, camping, and open fire are not.

History

According to Luontoon.fi, a croft existed at Telkkämäki from the first half of the 1700s before the great land division. The Telkkämäki holding was separated from Mustolanmäki in the 1870s when Matti Mustonen, son of the Mustolanmäki estate holder, moved there. Slash-and-burn farming remained central because permanent fields were difficult on stony ground; the family farmed until the 1960s and the last traditional burns took place in the 1940s. Metsähallitus has burned new demonstration kaskis at Telkkämäki using traditional methods since 1993, including newer huuhta- and rieska-type burns to model historic Savonian practice.
