Description

The Katiskaniemi nature trail is about 1.9 km as a shoreline loop in Kuopio, North Savo. It circles Katiskaniemi beside Kallavesi from the Rauhalahti spa area, mostly through protected woodland with deciduous groves and rocky pine stands. Kuopio.fi describes interpretation along the path, flying squirrel and lesser spotted woodpecker habitat in old aspen and grey alder, and traditional grazing landscapes near the shore. Metsähallitus lists the Katiskaniemi destination on Luontoon.fi for map-based browsing in the same lakeland setting. Getting there

Kuopio.fi lists the trailhead on Katiskaniementie in the Levänen district (postal code 70700) starting behind Kylpylähotelli Rauhalahti, with links to the city map and the Retkikartta.fi Lipas route view for the same line. Retkipaikka parked at the hotel car park on Katiskaniementie and walked from the hexagonal info board behind the buildings. Local bus access is often described via the Rauhalahti hotel stop; confirm current lines and timetables on the city’s transport pages.

History

Jätkänkämppä was built as a logging cabin in Nurmes in 1952 and relocated to Rauhalahti in 1987, as described in on-the-ground reporting. Between 1999 and 2003 the City of Kuopio carried out habitat care in the protected forests—removing spruce from deciduous stands and adding dead wood to benefit species dependent on decaying timber.
