Description

Pumpulikirkko trails are about 6 km as one point-to-point hiking line in Rautavaara, North Savo, linking the northern approach toward Konttimäki pysäköintialue with the Nuorisokeskus Metsäkartano shore area. The City of Rautavaara describes the distance from Konttimäki pysäköintialue, notes summer 2022 upgrades such as new wooden walkways, and stresses waterproof boots because tread can stay wet and rocky. Tiilikkajärvi National Park visitor rules and the official Pumpulikirkko trail description on Luontoon.fi use the Finnish name Pumpulikirkon reitti—check there before you go because Pumpulikirkko joined the national park on 1 June 2023. The geology everyone comes for is Pumpulikirkko itself: a steep-walled crevice opening into a rock-walled clearing, with a large giant’s kettle eroded open on one side so you can look into the cavity. That short nature path from Konttimäki pysäköintialue is about 1.3–1.4 km one way on foot through old-growth spruce and pine, bog bridges, and rocky steps. Along the roughly 6 km line you pass Konttimäki pysäköintialue first, then about 2.8 km from the northern end you reach Yrttilampi tulentekopaikka with Yrttilampi kuivakäymälä a few dozen metres away—useful if you continue south on the same corridor that Virvatulten polku shares through this section. The route finishes near Metsäkartanon nuorisokeskuksen uimapaikka at Metsäkartanontie 700, beside Metsäkartanon frisbeegolfrata, Metsäkartanon kuntosali, and Metsäkartanon liikuntasali; Erä- ja luontopolku II, Metsäkartanon valaistu kuntorata, and Metsäkartanon valaistu latu also meet the sports shore, so day visitors can pair a forest walk with a swim, disc golf, or a lap on the lit ski or fitness tracks. Retkipaikka describes the approach over mixed duckboards to the canyon rim, very old spruce forest with beard lichen, loud birdlife in summer, and the sudden canyon floor of waist-high ferns under straight rock walls. Ice and snow can linger in shaded pockets into early summer.

Length & route

The trail is about 6 km point-to-point on the stored hiking line between the northern end and the Metsäkartano youth-centre shore. The signed nature path to the Pumpulikirkko gorge from Konttimäki pysäköintialue is about 1.3–1.4 km one way; walking out and back only that segment is often quoted near 2.6 km round trip in trip copy. Terrain mixes dry forest tread, bog duckboards, and rocky steps near the crevice. Hello Kuopio lists orange paint blazes on trees for the Konttimäki spur.

Getting there

Most Pumpulikirkko visitors drive to Konttimäki pysäköintialue on Pumpulikirkontie 319; the City of Rautavaara and Hello Kuopio both list that lot with trail maps on site. Our route line crosses that parking area before continuing toward Yrttilampi and Metsäkartanontie 700. Nuorisokeskus Metsäkartano notes it sits about 8 km from Pumpulikirkko by bicycle or car if you prefer to stage from the lakeshore centre instead. Regional access is along Highway 87 and local roads through Rautavaara in North Savo.

Good to know

Hello Kuopio states there is no campfire site or toilet on the short Konttimäki–Pumpulikirkko spur itself; if you follow the longer mapped line, Yrttilampi tulentekopaikka and Yrttilampi kuivakäymälä appear before Metsäkartano. Respect Tiilikkajärvi National Park instructions on Luontoon.fi.

History

Retkipaikka recounts that Metsähallitus reserved the first 11-hectare Pumpulikirkko strict protection patch in 1972 around the kettle and canyon, expanded planning to roughly 308 hectares of old-growth forest in 1993, and notes later Natura 2000 enlargements that now sit inside the wider Tiilikkajärvi landscape. Pumpulikirkko became part of Tiilikkajärven kansallispuisto on 1 June 2023.
