Description
Koskelo mountain bike route is about 16.5 km end to end on our map as one non-loop ride through North Savo forest and shoreline near Suonenjoki and Iisvesi. For marked variants, crossing Highway 9, winter rules, maintenance notices, and GPX downloads, start from the City of Suonenjoki mountain bike trails hub. Visit Savo summarises Koskelo as a tougher cousin of the main Lintharju loops and points to Komoot for extra browsing.
The city describes two main approaches: roughly 7 km from Suonenjoki toward Koskelo via Vanhamäki, or about 12 km following Kirjosuo and Rajakorpi; from Lintharju you can join at the Kirjosuo junction toward Vanhamäki, where you must cross Highway 9 with extreme care. Terrain is more demanding than the easy Lintharju canvas loops: expect swamp and duckboards, short road links, paths under power lines, ditch crossings, humps, and rockier pitches where the ground can stay very wet—walking the bike is normal after rain. The network uses yellow paint markings and guide signs; Visit Savo also mentions sign-style trail markers on Koskelo. Winter cycling here is strictly forbidden because the line partly overlaps snowmobile routes. Along the way the city and Visit Savo highlight stops such as Vanhamäki and Koskelon matkailukeskus for lunch or coffee; the city’s Finnish pages also mention sauna by arrangement.
Along the ride you pass swimming beaches and recreation pockets tied to our place list: about 8 km in, Jauhojärven uimapaikka makes a simple water stop, and the Vanhamäki equestrian cluster sits close to the same kilometres. Further toward the city side, Kokkolammen uimapaikka sits near lake shore, while the Kaatron sports shore brings together Kaatron laavu for a lean-to break, Kaatron outdoor exercise sites, ice hall surroundings, disc golf, ski-jump hills above the forest, and shoreline swimming spots—useful if you want shade, a snack break, or a look at local facilities in one sweep.
This line hooks into the wider Suonenjoki outdoor fabric: Lintharjun Maastoypöräreitti and Lintharjun luontopolku share the same ridge and shore band; Lintharjun ladut winter routes and the Sisä-Savon Kelkkareitti snowmobile corridor explain the winter bike ban where corridors touch; the long Sisä-Savon retkeilyreitti hiking network and Suonenjon Melontareitti kayaking line radiate from similar shore access points; Vanhamäen valjakkohiihtolatu touches the horse fields near Vanhamäki. Routes may be ridden both directions where the network allows—yield to slower users where the bike line shares the outdoor route, and keep situational speed in check on two-way singletrack. SawoRental, which rents e-mountain bikes for exploring the Suonenjoki MTB network around Lintharju, positions Koskelo as clearly more technical than the beginner-friendly Palolampi-style loops.
Length & route
The trail is about 16.5 km end to end on our map, not a loop. The City of Suonenjoki publishes option lengths of roughly 7 km from Suonenjoki toward Koskelo via Vanhamäki and about 12 km around Kirjosuo and Rajakorpi; Visit Savo rounds the network experience to about 19 km with similar segment ideas.
Getting there
Pick up the Koskelo line from Suonenjoki or join it from Lintharju at the Kirjosuo intersection toward Vanhamäki; the road crossing on Highway 9 needs extra caution. Paper maps are below the ice rink on Koulukatu and at junctions; parking for the wider MTB network includes Onkilampi and Vanhamäki. SawoRental’s Lintharju guide also calls out the lower ice-rink car park off Koulukatu as a common network start near route maps.
Good to know
Winter cycling on the Koskelo route is strictly forbidden where the line follows snowmobile routes. Ride both directions where allowed and give way when sharing corridors with hikers. Maintenance notices for the Lintharju–Koskelo MTB network are posted on the municipal notice board linked from the City of Suonenjoki pages.
Where to rent bikes
