Description
Pirkan Taival is a long-distance hiking trail network in northern Pirkanmaa. This page follows about 69.8 km of that network through Ikaalinen as one continuous hiking route. The same Ikaalinen section is listed on Luontoon.fi for nationwide trip planning. Six municipalities are preparing a coordinated outdoor route plan for the wider Pirkan Taival corridor so investment and maintenance can follow a shared alignment; project news and materials are published by Ekokumppanit. The City of Ikaalinen is part of that work and announces local consultation steps on its own site. Maastomarko’s Pirkan Taival III trip report from summer 2023 adds practical notes on markings, forest roads, and the Seitsemisen–Tevaniemi link in the same landscape.
Ikaalinen lies in Pirkanmaa. For day-to-day planning on this segment, lean on Luontoon.fi together with the municipal project hub.
Along the first third of this segment, about 7 km from the start, you reach Vähä Ojajärven nuotiopaikka on the Vähä Ojajärvi shore. Around 17 km, the route passes Luhalahden kuntosali and Luhalahden uimapaikka near Lake Kirkkojärvi, and Luhalahden koulun jääkiekkokaukalo—useful landmarks if you are joining the trail from village roads. In the same kilometre band, winter ski tracks such as Luhalahden jäälatu and Luhalahden koulun latu meet the route; in summer the character is forest path and local road links.
From the high thirties onward, Kalliolammen nuotiopaikka and Latoveden laavu offer long break options beside forest ponds and small lakes. The same Maastomarko account describes Latoveden laavu as a familiar lunch stop on the way toward Tevaniemi, with a longer forest-road stretch afterward and a crossing of the Ostrobothnia railway where the marked path uses an overpass on a longer loop. Still farther, Väinänvuorenlaavu and Vahonkosken laavu sit a few kilometres apart on lake shores—natural targets if you split the hike across several days.
The wider Pirkan Taival network connects to other outdoor corridors: where this route meets longer cycling routes or parallel hiking pieces, you can continue on Järvienreitit- Aure, step onto the shorter Pirkan taival Haveri- Väinänvuori day section, or link toward Uittajanpolku and Seitsemisen polkupyöräreitti through the Tevaniemi–Seitsemisen area. Multiharju-Hirviharju is another short hiking connector in the same landscape mosaic.
Length & route
The trail is about 69.8 km as one hiking route through Ikaalinen. The wider Pirkan Taival system is a long-distance corridor across several municipalities; recent planning materials describe the full alignment as slightly under 300 km and split across coordinated outdoor route plans. Section lengths and day splits therefore depend on which link paths you use; this page describes the Ikaalinen municipality segment from end to end.
Getting there
The Ikaalinen segment of Pirkan Taival is a long point-to-point line with several possible access points along local roads; exact trailhead choice depends on whether you walk north–south through Tevaniemi and lake country or join near Luhalahti. Maastomarko describes one practical summer access pattern via Seitsemisen eteläpuolen pysäköinti (Multiharjun pysäköintialue) when linking from national-park trails toward Tevaniemi, and another pattern with gear staged for a Tevaniemi finish. For closures, railway works, and reroutes, check Luontoon.fi and the municipal project updates before you travel.
Good to know
Long-distance hikers should carry water in warm weather; Maastomarko notes heavy heat and biting insects on a July traverse of this segment. Forestry roads, railway crossings, and occasional faint tread on the ground make map and marking discipline important even where red rings are frequent. For the evolving network alignment, follow Ekokumppanit and the municipal notices.
History
The municipalities involved describe Pirkan Taival as a traditional and historically significant long-distance hiking route in northern Pirkanmaa and are preparing a coordinated outdoor route plan so the corridor can be managed as a coherent whole (press materials and project pages, 2024–2025).
Itinerary
Example pacing for the full ~70 km as a multi-day hike using stops along the line (adjust to your own speed and season):
Day 1 — About 17–20 km from the start to the Luhalahti shore band: breaks at Vähä Ojajärven nuotiopaikka (around 7 km), then Luhalahden uimapaikka and Luhalahden kuntosali near 17 km. This clusters village services, swimming, and winter ski-track junctions if you arrive in cold months.
Day 2 — About 20–25 km across the mid section: Kalliolammen nuotiopaikka (around 38 km) and Latoveden laavu (around 38–39 km) for water and long rest; expect forest paths mixed with forest-road connectors.
Day 3 — About 20–25 km to the far end: Väinänvuorenlaavu (around 45 km) and Vahonkosken laavu (around 47 km) as late-day targets before finishing toward Tevaniemi.
If you walk only part of the segment, use the same kilometre hints to pick entry and exit roads.
Red paint rings on trees (described as frequent and easy to follow in summer on the Seitsemisen–Tevaniemi link; follow the same system along this Ikaalinen segment).

Distance
About 2–4 days of walking for a full traverse of this ~70 km segment, or 3 long days for fit hikers; single-day sections are practical if you use road access partway.
Est. Time
Forest path and forest road mixed; occasional short village links near Luhalahti. Maastomarko notes extended forest-road walking and a railway crossing context on the Seitsemisen–Tevaniemi link; expect similar surface variety along the Pirkan Taival corridor.
