Description
This is a short, point-to-point light-traffic link of about 1.9 km along the Ukonniemi and Lammassaari lakeshore in Imatra, meant for walking, running, and cycling away from mixed traffic. For network-wide walking and cycling policy, surface renewals, and the Käpy promotion programme, see the City of Imatra’s walking and cycling pages. The Rauha–Ukonniemi route network plan released in late 2025 covers joint work between Imatra and Lappeenranta: new signage phases in through 2026 and trail descriptions also flow to regional outdoor channels.
Starting from the Lammassaaren laavu - Imatra side, you quickly enter the lakeshore recreation strip toward Lempukan uimaranta and past Imatran Kylpylä and its sports facilities—useful if you combine a ride with spa or gym visits. The middle section threads the dense Ukonniemi sports campus: Ukonniemen urheilukenttä, Ukonniemen kuntoportaat, Ukonniemen ulkoliikuntapuisto, Imatran jäähalli, and Karhumäki DiscGolfPark sit within a few hundred metres of each other. Toward the southern end, Ukonlinna, Ukonlinnan beachvolleykentät, and Ukonlinnan uimaranta offer beach and open-air stopovers on Saimaa. Saimaa Cycling groups several other marked loops in the same headland—separate MTB and nature products—so you can extend a day with those circuits after using this link to move between parking, laavu, and arena areas. The longer Neljän saaren pyöräilyreitti and Imatran arkkitehtuuri- ja nähtävyyskierros share segments nearby, and the South Karelia Regional Council ties the city into wider Saimaa itineraries through its themed cycling route family.
Ride at a considerate speed on shared paths, yield at crossings, and expect families, event traffic, and winter maintenance equipment in season—the 2018 Yle report captured real friction over alignment and event use near Ukonlinna Hostelli, which is why keeping situational awareness matters along this busy shore.
Length & route
The route is about 1.9 km end to end and is not a closed loop, so you can treat it as a connector between the Lammassaari nature and laavu area and the Ukonniemi arena, spa, and beach cluster. Allow roughly 15–25 minutes of easy cycling or 30–40 minutes on foot one way, depending on stops.
Getting there
Join the path from either end: the Lammassaari side near Lammassaaren laavu - Imatra for nature-trail combinations, or the Ukonniemi sports and spa side if you arrive by car to event parking. The City of Imatra reports roughly 146 km of pedestrian and cycle paths citywide, so local residential links usually reach these shore sections once you are in Imatra. For longer Saimaa cycling, combine with the South Karelia themed route materials when planning border-to-border legs.
Good to know
Rauha–Ukonniemi route productisation adds clearer descriptions and refreshed signage through 2026; check the city’s press materials for the latest installation status before a photography-focused visit. Saimaa Cycling reminds users that multi-use paths in Ukonniemi are ridden at your own risk, with extra care at crossings marked in their materials. Spa, ice hall, and stadium services along the corridor are commercial venues with their own hours and fees.
History
National broadcaster Yle reported in 2018 that construction of the Ukonniemi light-traffic link had stalled amid disagreement between the city and Ukonlinna Hostelli’s operators over alignment between the hostel and the beach, safety at a steep bend, and impacts on events—while the city’s technical lead defended the chosen line to limit tree removal upslope.
Either direction along the open connector; choose based on whether you start from Lammassaari nature parking or Ukonniemi services.
