Description
Makumatka is a long South Karelia theme ride that Visit Lappeenranta promotes in English as the Local Food Tasting Cycling Route from Lappeenranta: it strings together Lake Saimaa scenery, South Karelian food stops, and Salpa Line military history around the city and its rural hinterland. The same regional programme that produced Etelä-Karjala’s fifteen themed cycling routes was planned in workshops in Lappeenranta and Imatra with map work by FCG; funding came from the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, and the routes were designed for mobile navigation rather than standalone field signage. On our map the line is about 93.4 km and is not stored as a closed loop. After leaving the city edge you swing through quieter lake shores and villages: near Taavetti and Jurvala the corridor overlaps places such as Lepolan uimapaikka and the Jurvala outdoor cluster, where the winter ski route Jäälatu Jurvala-Perälä shares the shoreline and connects to a lean-to at Pärsäniemen laavu on that ski line. Around the mid-route, Kotalahden avantouintipaikka and the adjacent biathlon and shooting-sports area sit beside forested bays, while Lemin kirkonkylä offers beaches and village services such as Lahnajärven uimaranta and boat launches along Rantatie. The return leg passes Rutolan taukopaikka and Rutolan melontalaituri toward Lappeenranta’s sports harbour belt, where the longer Länsi-Saimaan linnoituskierros cycling route shares many of the same urban connectors if you want to extend the tour. Expect a demanding day in the saddle or an overnight split; bring food, water, and repair supplies, and check weather before you go. For short urban links or first/last kilometres, Kaakau city bikes use Donkey Republic stations across Lappeenranta.
Length & route
The mapped route is about 93.4 km one continuous line. Visit Lappeenranta markets the experience as a long tasting tour from the city (their English listing uses a round-figure distance in that range). Treat climbing and exact surface splits with a downloaded GPX or the regional outdoor portal rather than third-party traces.
Getting there
Visit Lappeenranta presents the ride as starting from central Lappeenranta. Practical joining points on the stored geometry sit near Tapavainolan kenttä only a few kilometres into the trace; harbour, market square, and railway station Kaakau hubs are listed for city-bike pickup. Use the Lappeenranta route planner map linked from Visit’s city-bike page to align station choice with your start.
Good to know
Etelä-Karjalan liitto notes that the 2018 theme-route package did not fund physical trail signs; navigation is intended via mobile apps and services such as Outdoors Finland and international outdoor portals, with later investment sought for signage. Visit Lappeenranta also links visitors to wider South Karelia cycling collections and events such as Saimaa Cycle Tour.
History
Interpretation along the ride draws on the Salpa Line, the Second World War–era fortification chain across eastern Finland, and on the 18th-century fortress zone in Lappeenranta that was part of the wider defence network toward Saint Petersburg—storytelling that Visit Lappeenranta highlights for this themed tour. Rakuunamäki’s garrison history also appears in general South Karelia cycling marketing for the same programme.
Itinerary
Day 1 (0–35 km): Roll from central Lappeenranta toward Taavetti and Jurvala; pause at Lepolan uimapaikka or the Jurvala shoreline cluster (about 26 km). Day 1 (35–55 km): Cross toward Kotalahti’s winter-swimming and biathlon area, then Lemin kirkonkylä for beaches and village services near Lahnajärven uimaranta (about 52–53 km along the trace). Day 2 or afternoon return (55–93 km): Close the loop toward Rutolan taukopaikka and the Rutola paddling dock, then follow lakeside bike paths past Huhtiniemi and Sammonlahti back into Lappeenranta’s grid—allow buffer time for food stops and Salpa Line sites.
Where to rent bikes
Kaakau operates Donkey Republic city bikes from stations across Lappeenranta (harbour, market square, railway station, university campuses, and many housing-area hubs); download the app, unlock a bike at a station, and return it to an official drop-off point. For longer touring bikes or e-bikes, contact specialist retailers in the region by phone or visit their store pages—many South Karelia visitors combine theme routes with their own equipment.
The mapped geometry is about 93.4 km and is not a closed loop in our database. Tourism copy describes a circuit from Lappeenranta through rural South Karelia and back; follow a downloaded GPX to match your preferred start/finish in the city.
