The Ränkimäki summer trail is an easy loop of about 6.4 km in Palonkylä, Ilmajoki, South Ostrobothnia. It is listed on Luontoon.fi as a summer hiking route in the Palonkylä outdoor area. The loop uses forest paths and duckboards through spruce forest, rocky outcrops, and short boggy stretches, and shares space with Palonkylän kuntorata and Ilmajoen frisbeegolfrata before returning to the start. Retkipaikka describes the branch from the fitness trail into the “Ränkimäen kierros” circuit, a kota-style shelter on the rocks roughly two kilometres along that forest loop, and boardwalks over the wettest ground. About 3.2 km into the ring you reach Palonkylän laavu on an open rock shelf—natural lunch stop with firewood. Hiihtomaan laavu sits closer to the ski and fitness hub; toward the end you pass Ilmajoen frisbeegolfrata and the Palonkylä school sports yards before closing the loop. The same Palonkylä trail network connects to Ilkan polku, a long-distance hiking route toward Seinäjoki and Kurikka. Length & route

The summer loop is about 6.4 km as one ring. It combines dedicated forest path with short shared sections of Palonkylän kuntorata (about 5.6 km of gravel fitness loop in the same area, partly lit in winter as a ski corridor). Duckboards help over wet ground; after rain some stretches can stay soft despite boardwalks. Ilkan polku is a separate long-distance trail; published lengths are often about 33 km along the Kurikka–Ilmajoki–Seinäjoki corridor, while mapped geometry for the full trail can differ slightly by variant.

Getting there

Most visitors park at the Palonkylä fitness trail parking on Riistavallintie in Ilmajoki; regional pages point to the large lot beside the disc golf course and fitness loop—Riistavallintie 31–32 depending on which facility you align with. The City of Ilmajoki notes winter access to the lit main loop from Riistavallintie and mentions a flatter extension reached more easily from the Vakavuori industrial side.
