City of Kuortane – Kuuden tähden reitistö and Fatbike lending+
Description
For Nokiottien Pyörätaival, the City of Kuortane posts opening notes, wayfinding tips, and how to use the municipal free Fatbike loans alongside ordinary mountain bikes. The Kuuden Tähden Reitistö project hub covers cycling, walking, and skiing ideas across the Kuusiokunta municipalities and links to the route–place search curated with Outdooractive. In South Ostrobothnia, this mapped line is about 59.4 km point-to-point between forest roads, upgraded gravel, and older trail corridors—Officially the mountain-bike stage runs from Murronneva on the Alavus–Kuortane boundary toward Panula and Kaarankajärvi near the Lehtimäki municipal border; large printed maps with distances are placed at the Murronneva start and at the Kuortane Sports Institute multifunction hall end, with a smaller board and rescue-service positioning point at Panula. Ykköslehti recorded planners’ stage-by-stage outline past Sarvikkaankoski, Kaatialan quarry, Torpa camp centre, Ruismäki, the Sports Institute, Ruonan bridge, Haarakangas, and Kaarankajärvi’s east side.
Along the line you climb from the Kaatialan louhos area into a long Kuortane town-side cluster: school sports yards, Kirkkoranta and Hallisenlammen shores, and the Kuortaneen urheiluopisto campus with Monitoimihalli, Opiston kota, grill shelter, pools, gyms, rinks, and Opiston laavu for a break before continuing north-east. Past town, Haarakankaan laavu offers a shelter in the forest and Miljoonalaavu sits deeper along the arc before the Sarvikkaankosket–Ylämylly waterfall stretch at the far end. The route crosses or neighbours other maintained lines such as Okslampi-Mäyryn Neste moottorikelkkaura near Mäyryn uimaranta, connects with Keskusta-Opisto latu and Nokua-Lakso-Hallisenlampi liitäntälatu around Kirkkorannan kota and Hallisenlammen laavu, and meets Kuortaneenjärven järvilatu 32 km along Kirkkoranta–lintutorni ice-trail features—use those only for their intended seasons and activities.
Suomen Latu profiled Kuortaneen Latu’s volunteer build: blue metal fingerposts at junctions and blue posts along the corridor, easements negotiated parcel by parcel with Maanmittauslaitos, and reuse of some older Kuudestaan-era alignments beside brand-new benching and surfacing. The project info site explains the wider 2020+ Leader programme to catalogue 400 km of legacy trails and market services. Check the City of Kuortane pages before trips for ongoing surfacing work, winter frost heave, or temporary closures.
Length & route
The mapped trail is about 59.4 km as one continuous line and is not a loop. Official communications describe the open Nokiottien Pyörätaival stage as roughly 60 km between Murronneva and the Panula area; elevation gain is not stated on the municipal page. Ykköslehti notes roughly 30 km from Kuortaneen urheiluopisto toward Murronneva and just under 30 km toward Panula.
Getting there
Stage your ride from Murronneva on the Alavus–Kuortane boundary as the public opening narrative describes, or join at Kuortaneen urheiluopisto where the multifunction hall end carries a full wall map. The City of Kuortane also runs free Fatbike reservations at Ylijoen koulu and Leppälänkylä by messaging the listed bike contacts for a lockbox code. For loan rules and contacts use the municipal sports-equipment lending page.
Good to know
Nokiottien Pyörätaival suits both fatbikes and conventional mountain bikes on the City of Kuortane page. Suomen Latu notes positioning beacons along the corridor and Kaatialan louhos. Stick to the signed corridor out of respect for private parcels. Future appearance on Metsähallitus Luontoon was announced ahead of launch; confirm the latest catalogue online. Winter freeze and seasonal maintenance can improve or delay surfacing—see the city article for current messaging.
History
Planning for Nokiottien Pyörätaival began in 2020 with Leader Kuudestaan ry together with Kuortaneen Latu; Ari Yli-Kaatiala led line design and Kuortaneen Ladun chair Ulla-Riitta Soini described easements across more than a hundred land parcels and Maanmittauslaitos agreements. The route was inaugurated in early October 2024 at Kuortane Sports Institute with a budget of roughly EUR 60 000 co-funded by Leader Kuudestaan and Kuortaneen Säästöpankkisäätiö. The wider Kuuden Tähden Reitistö programme mapped over 400 km of older walking routes and started marketing in 2020–2022 with productisation work from autumn 2022 onward. Officials and Ykköslehti outline a future ring toward Valkealampi, Vetola, and Töysä to reach about 120 km—timing depends on landowner permissions.
Where to rent bikes
The City of Kuortane operates free municipal Fatbike lending with three bike sizes each at Ylijoen koulu (contact Antti Koivumäki) and Leppälänkylä (contact Ismo Mustapää); message for a lockbox code as described on the sports-equipment lending page. Ordinary mountain bikes suit the route as well.
Ride as a one-way line between the Murronneva trailhead and the Panula–Kaarankajärvi end as described municipally, or reverse-shuttle using the Sports Institute midpoint maps. Our mapped geometry follows the same corridor from the Kaatialan area toward Sarvikkaankosket; match your GPS to local blue post alignments in the field.
