Description

Kalajärvi geological nature trail is an easy 3.8 km loop in Peräseinäjoki, next to the Kalajärvi recreation and tourism area in Seinäjoki. For route description, two trailheads, and practical tips, start with Visit Seinäjoki Region; Retkeile Lakeuksilla summarises the same route as part of the wider Seinäjoki trail network and notes how the loop joins other tracks near the lake. The loop is mostly easy walking in pine-dominated forest and forestry land, with interactive nature and geology boards along the way. The first 1.1 km is built as a wide boardwalk and is promoted as barrier-free to the lean-to and accessible toilet; beyond that, the path is still straightforward but has roots and stones in places. Markings use blue symbols on posts. At roughly 0.9 km into the loop you pass the busiest part of the Kalajärvi services: Kalajärven parkkipaikka, Kalajärven Kota, Kalajärven tenniskenttä, Kalajärven beachvolleykenttä, Frisbeegolf Kalajärvi, Kalajärven retkiluistelurata, Ravintola Kalajärvi, and Kalajärven uimaranta — a compact strip for food, swimming, disc golf, and winter ice skating when the track is open. Length & route

The trail is about 3.8 km as one loop. The first 1.1 km is a wide, barrier-free boardwalk to the lean-to; the rest is forest path with short duckboard sections over wetter ground, including a brief mire passage. Two road crossings break the forest; one segment follows the lit Kalajärven kuntorata past Kalajärven Kota before returning toward the start. Official material describes an optional side loop to the observation forest and a short spur to Kalajärven metsäkämppä. Allow about one hour on foot at an easy pace; Retkipaikka’s walk with extra spurs clocked closer to four kilometres and an hour.

Getting there

Visit Seinäjoki Region gives two signed starts: Trailhead 1 at Kalajärven parkkipaikka on Kalajärventie 6, Peräseinäjoki, with an information board opposite the parking area; Trailhead 2 is on the north side of Alavudentie (road 672) at the Kalajärventie junction. Retkeile Lakeuksilla also lists a start from Alavudentie 278 with coordinates 62.576222, 23.105222, on a short dead-end spur to the parking area. Good to know

The area follows leave-no-trace practice: pack out your litter. Walking the nature trail is free. Winter maintenance is not provided for the hiking loop; when snow lies, cross-country tracks may use the same corridor, so check local winter guidance before heading out. Lighting applies to short shared sections with Kalajärven kuntorata, not the whole forest loop.
