Description
Hermanninpolku is an easy, about 2.1 km point-to-point walk on the Parviaisentie side of Soini in South Ostrobothnia, linking the Matosuo trailhead area with the Kaihiharju end where Arpaisten reitti passes through. For downloadable maps, the PDF brochure that bundles Soini hiking lines, and the same parking wording the municipality uses on its patikkareitit hub, rely on the Municipality of Soini outdoor pages. Visit Soini packages the trail for visitors alongside Hermanninlenkki and Soinin esteetön luontopolku, including the Multiantie 707 and Multiantie 495 access notes.
From Matosuo pysäköintialue the path enters spruce forest, duckboards, and open bog before climbing onto dry ridge; Retkeile Lakeuksilla summarises that mix of conifer woods, aapa mire, and harju terrain for planners who like a regional overview. Löytöretkiä lähelle adds village-scale notes on Leader-funded boardwalk renewals, the marked Tervahauta point, optional winter skiing when the track is rolled, and the Puuhatupa parking option on Parviaisentie. After roughly 150 m you pass Soinin Iso Kaihijärvi Esteetön laavu on the shore fringe of Iso Kaihijärvi, part of the same Kaihiharju service cluster as Soinin esteetön luontopolku. About 1.3 km along, Hermannin / Kaipaisen kämppä sits beside the ruins of Hermanni Kaipaisen old homesite: Parviaisentie village association built the shelter in 1999 with indoor fireplace and benches so groups can warm up out of the rain, and there is an outdoor fire ring, a spring, and stored firewood in the woodshed. The trail is marked and point-of-interest labels such as the Tervahauta site appear along the way. At the north end, Kaihiharju offers a marked campfire place and ties into the longer network: Arpaisten reitti continues toward Ähtäri, while the 2021-finished 7 km Hermanninlenkki loop from the Kaihiharjun parking stitches Hermanninpolku, sections of Arpaisten reitti, and the challenging accessible nature path with lake views, lean-to, and indoor fire option at the cabin. You can finish at Hermanninpolku parkkipaikka and retrace your steps or combine with those loops for a longer day.
Soini lies in eastern South Ostrobothnia near the Central Finland border. South Ostrobothnia is known for open bogs, forested ridges, and long-distance links such as Arpaisten ulkoilu- ja vaellusreitti.
Length & route
The trail is about 2.1 km as one point-to-point line. Brochures and tourism pages often round the Hermannin tuoli–Kaihiharju spacing to about 2.5 km, which matches the same walk counted slightly differently. Expect short forest-road connectors near the Parviainen trailheads, duckboards over wet bog, and easy ridge walking in the middle. Combining with the 7 km Hermanninlenkki loop turns the outing into a half-day tour with several fire and lean-to options.
Getting there
The Municipality of Soini lists two conventional starts: Multiantie 707, turn onto a gravel road and drive about 1 km to Hermannin tuoli parking at the trailhead chair; or Multiantie 495, follow gravel roughly 1.5 km to the Kaihiharju gravel-pit parking above the bog. The same Multiantie 495 access details appear in regional tourism copy for the Hermanninlenkki starting point. On our map the main bookends are Matosuo pysäköintialue near the southern end and Hermanninpolku parkkipaikka near the northern end; Matosuo parkkipaikka sits almost on the line at the very start. Löytöretkiä lähelle also mentions leaving a car at Puuhatupa yard, Parviaisentie 6, and walking about 2 km along the forest track toward the cabin.
Good to know
Winter visitors sometimes follow the prepared ski track on this corridor when snow is deep enough. A shared winter corridor also crosses Kaihiharju on Kolunjärvi-Soini moottorikelkkaura, so keep an ear out for riders in cold months. The Hermanninlenkki ring is also described as suitable on foot or mountain bike because it reuses pieces of this path and Arpaisten reitti —ride only if you are comfortable sharing narrow forest tread with hikers. The municipality publishes a combined brochure PDF from its patikkareitit page.
History
Parviaisen kyläyhdistys built Hermannin / Kaipaisen kämppä in 1999 beside the ruins of Hermanni Kaipaisen former dwelling, using Leader funding channelled through Kuudestaan ry’s local development support; villagers celebrated the shelter and trail’s 20th anniversary in autumn 2019. Duckboards along Hermanninpolku were renewed a few years before 2020 with another Leader-backed project.
