Description
King's Path is a point-to-point hiking trail of about 8.1 km in Soini, South Ostrobothnia, following the Kuninkaanjoki from the Vuorenmaa hill area toward the fringe of the village. For route summaries, rest-stop names, and the reminder that there is no winter maintenance, start with the Municipality of Soini hiking-trails hub. Retkeile Lakeuksilla lists both trailheads with coordinates, marks the difficulty as moderate, notes red paint blazes in the forest, and warns that some sections need upkeep—especially near the industrial strip between Tukkitie and Möksyntie. Visit Seinäjoki Region introduces the same trail in a regional overview and highlights how spring runoff turns the river’s small rapids into lively stretches.
From the Vuorenmaa end you are right beside Ski Vuorenmaa and Vuorenmaan kuntoportaat: many people park at Vuorenmaan parkkipaikka, climb or ride up to the upper lift plateau, and step onto the marked path within a couple of hundred metres of Vuorenmaan laavu, which looks out over the forested ridge tops. The trail then drops toward Kuninkaanlaakso, where the river valley feels deepest and information boards along the municipal service description sketch Soini’s history and traditions. About 2.9 km from the Vuorenmaa start you reach Kuninkaanlaakso itself—worth pausing before you continue toward the Tukkitie trailhead and parking. Along the river, Löytöretkiä lähelle describes beaver workings, footbridges, short road links, and the mix of narrow boardwalks with more remote-feeling forest.
Carry out anything you pack in; official messaging asks for litter-free hiking on this corridor. Bridges and Vuorenmaan kuntoportaat can stay slick when wet or frosty, so footwear with a solid grip matters.
Length & route
The trail is about 8.1 km as traced on our map between the Vuorenmaa hill trailhead cluster and the Tukkitie end. Official texts and regional listings usually quote roughly 8.3 km for the same point-to-point line, which matches once rounding and minor map revisions are allowed for. Allow about three to four hours if you stop at both Vuorenmaan laavu and Kuninkaanlaakso, photograph the rapids, and take care on the steeper pitches. Terrain alternates between riverside footpaths, short road connections, duckboards over side channels, and climbs that make the Municipality of Soini characterise the itinerary as moderately demanding rather than a family stroll. Strollers are not suitable anywhere along the route. There is no winter grooming; plan for snow-free conditions only.
Getting there
Northern end (Vuorenmaa): Retkeile Lakeuksilla places Ski Vuorenmaa at Vuorenmaantie 208 and notes parking either at the lower or upper hill lots off Koskitie 25, where signage points hikers toward the trail instead of straight down the ski slope. Our Vuorenmaan parkkipaikka stop sits next to that upper access cluster. Southern end: from Soini’s roundabout follow road 697 toward Karstula about 1.2 km, turn left onto Tukkitie, continue roughly 800 m, and use the signed gravel lot on the left; a footbridge across the road leads to the marked path. GPS published for the Tukkitie lot is about 62.8891°N, 24.2184°E. A printable PDF map is linked from Retkeile Lakeuksilla for offline planning.
Good to know
Expect firewood service at both laavut and two separate fireplace sites altogether. The Municipality of Soini lists three named rest areas—Jokiranta, Notko, and Kuninkaanlaakso—along the river narrative; only some of those names appear in our stop list yet, so watch for updated signage. Dogs are not discussed in the materials consulted; follow everyday open-country etiquette and any later municipal rules. Respect temporary diversions if maintenance crews close short sections near Tukkitie–Möksyntie.
You can walk either direction; many itineraries start from Vuorenmaa for the downhill bias toward Tukkitie, while others begin at the southern lot for a steady climb toward the ski hill.
