Description
For current winter and summer use of the Kalevankangas trail network, start with the City of Mikkeli Kalevankangas outdoor routes page. The same ridge area is described for visitors on Visit Mikkeli. Locally, this biking trail is the longest of three colour-marked multipurpose routes at Kalevankangas, known as Karhun kiertämä; the shorter Otso shortcut multipurpose trail (Kalevankangas, Mikkeli) and Nallepolku multipurpose trail (Kalevankangas) share the same Raviradantie trailhead neighbourhood. The trail is about 6.4 km along one continuous path through pine forest on Mikkeli’s esker, with gentle ups and downs suited to mountain biking, walking, running, and snowshoeing when conditions allow.
Along the route you pass the Kalevankankaan kuntoportaat fitness stairs early on, then forest before reaching Kalevankankaan laavu roughly mid-route—a good stop near Hanhilampi woodland. Nearer the Raviradantie sports cluster, outdoor gym areas include Kalevankankaan ulkokuntoilupuisto and Kalevankankaan ulkokuntoilupaikka, and the Saimaa Stadiumi and ice-sports facilities sit beside the trail. The Kalevankangas nature trail circles Hanhilampi on white otter-marked boards as a separate walking-focused loop; it intersects the same recreation hub and is worth combining if you want interpretive panels on geology and nature.
Yle reported when the three named multipurpose routes were completed: Velo-Saimaa and the city planned the network, the city marked trails and built new footbridges, routes are not floodlit, and in winter multipurpose trails are cleared of snow by snowmobile so ski tracks can stay in use for skiers—dogs are allowed on these trails. Luontopolkumies’ Retkipaikka write-up on Kalevankangas highlights how busy and well-loved the ridge is for outdoor exercise, with many intersecting routes beyond the nature trail alone.
Length & route
The trail is about 6.4 km along one continuous path. It is the longest of the three colour-marked multipurpose routes at Kalevankangas (Karhun kiertämä); official material often rounds the network to 6.2 km for this loop name. Terrain is mostly easy pine forest with small climbs.
Getting there
